Leicester City are delighted to announce that Kasper Schmeichel has committed his future to the Football Club by signing a new five-year contract until 2021.

The 29-year-old Denmark international played every minute of Leicester City’s historic 2015/16 Premier League winning campaign and has been a key member of the squad since his arrival in the summer of 2011.

Schmeichel’s performances throughout the season were crucial to the Foxes’ march to the title, and with just 11 Premier League goals conceded in 2016, the quality at the very top level was there for all to see.

Speaking to LCFC TV, Schmeichel said:"I'm just buzzing and I can't wait for the season to get started. It was a very easy decision. It was a case of coming back after winning the Premier League and making sure that the hunger was the same within myself and the squad. I've come back absolutely convinced that this is the place for me to be.
"We've taken some massive steps and ever since I arrived it's been fantastic. I've loved being here from minute one."

With 220 Leicester City appearances to his name, Schmeichel is one of the most experienced members of the current squad. That total also includes another ever-present season as the Foxes secured the Championship title under Nigel Pearson in 2013/14.

Alongside his outstanding talent for keeping the ball out of the net, Schmeichel’s distribution and quick thinking with the ball have proved to be a significant weapon in Leicester City’s counter-attacking armoury in recent years.

The success of Schmeichel and Leicester City since his arrival from Leeds United in 2011 is nothing short of meteoric, and with his new deal keeping him at the Club until 2021, there’s plenty of time for him to enhance his reputation as one of the best goalkeepers in the Club’s long history.

A Manchester City youth product, Schmeichel has also had spells with Darlington, Bury, Falkirk, Cardiff City, Coventry City and Notts County during his career, which now totals almost 400 appearances in all competitions.

Following those loan stints at Darlington and Falkirk at the start of his career, Schmeichel made the first of eight Premier League appearances for Manchester City in August 2007 in a 2-0 win away at West Ham United, after which came another two clean sheets in 1-0 wins at home to Derby County and Manchester United.

The 2011/12 Leicester City Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year made his debut for the Denmark national team in February 2013 against Macedonia.

Another cap against Malta followed before he almost single-handedly kept England at bay in a 1-0 friendly defeat at Wembley in March 2014.

After being named in the Football League Team of the Decade alongside City skipper Wes Morgan in 2015, Schmeichel has gone on to establish himself as no.1 for Denmark as well as building a reputation as one of the Premier League’s most talented goalkeepers.

Questions his own hunger to keep on achieving?

Great news!

As I said before, I'm always amazed by how much people underestimate Kasper's importance to this team.

He's a very good shot stopper, has great reflexes and his distribution is superb and a key part of our game.

Glad to see him sign a new long term deal!

We are certainty putting big names on long contracts.
Mummble grumble. What happens when we go down again. Mumble grumble etc etc.

I'm glad he's signed up.

He has his flaws, but has consistently improved upon them. Compare his performances over the last 18 months to those of his first. He has shown the ability to develop and improve, and I think we'll see even more out of him this year.

He doesn't appreciate comparisons to his father, but I'd certainly say he's done every bit as well as his senior throughout the last season.

I keep forgetting how far we have come. Anyone remember this (as if it can be forgotten!)

Shudder!!! You would like to think the sun blinded him, but the sad fact is, as he literally ate all the pies, so could not jump off the ground, anything over his head was always going into the net.

I was sat right behind the goal and your description is spookily accurate.
