I pretty much agree, although umpire review systems successfully employed in cricket and rugby are not used in the amateur game.

I love the appeal system in Test cricket - it has added massively to the game. I love it as much as I am tired of Luddites moaning about introducing it, or any tech, to football.

To the most powerful man in English football, our game's biggest issue isn't players cheating by overacting injuries, it isn't managers who can't behave with dignity when they lose, it isn't even the extortionate tickets prices to watch a game of football but instead the problem seems to lie with the almost insignificant number of occasions when the officials can't be sure if the whole of the ball has crossed the line

Suites a game played at a different tempo. Kind of brings a bit of action, perhaps ditracts from reading the paper and wakes the old farts up during their mid afternoon snooze.

Will there be a limit to the number of referrals such as in tennis I wonder?

I believe in introducing technology, I've got bored of whining players and managers who get paid too much and don't know how to lose with grace - if it shuts them up then I'm a happy man.

I can't be arsed to debate this, it's how I "feel" about the game not what I know to be true.

The big decisions, whether they're given correctly or not, usually end up in at least 60 seconds stoppage anyway - either a goal celebration or a mobbing of the referee. I don't mind an extra couple of minutes added on at the end if it means a goal has been given/ruled out correctly.

Never mind the refs, **** the players out too. Laser guided robot soccer players are the way forward for the game

You say ad break; I see beer-induced piss break while I enjoy super human robots refs with truly enormous jubblies officiating laser guided robot soccer players.

I'm excited about this.

Seriously though, video replays is all that is needed - none of this goal-line technology bullsh*t. £20 digital camera connected to a computer would do the job FFS!!

How many times have you seen TV replays and it's still not clear whether the ball has crossed the line?

High speed cameras are needed, and several of them in case there are players blocking the view.

Not many and the ones that were could easily be rectified by additional cameras which wouldn't require a vast amount of expenditure.

High speed cameras would be a help but not essential in my opinion as most shots would be topping out at about 70-80mph which isn't that fast in the grand scheme of things.

If you're only capturing 25 frames a second and are trying to measure something that may be over the line by an inch or two before going back into play, high speed cameras are essential.

Time travelling robots are the only solution, Blatter knows this and that's why he doesn't support technology.

I've just done some calculations...

If a ball is travelling at 30MPH, that's 528 inches per second.

Using a standard 25 frames per second camera, the ball could travel over 20 inches between frames. It could be well over the line before bouncing back out but the camera might not capture the moment it happened.

I've just looked up some of the proposed systems. The Hawkeye system uses six cameras around the stadium to track the ball, and would cost £250,000 to install. The system has to be able to "see" 25% of the ball for it to be able to work.

The Goalminder system is cheaper, it uses cameras embedded in the goalposts and crossbar. 2000FPS cameras though, not £20 cameras from Argos.

The Cairos GLT system uses special balls with sensors inside them, and magnetic grids buried under the pitch.

Maths makes me hard
