Hammered Derbyshire in a pre-season match yesterday, with a ton for Cobb, runs for Du Toit and wickets for Henderson.

Meaningless, but better than a heavy defeat!

Two batters who need to score a lot more runs this season to help fill the gap.

It took Cobb just 69 balls to reach his century.

Time for a trivia question...

Which record of Chris Balderstone's was beaten at the weekend, and who beat it?

Unfortunately Carlisle United - do not get that amount of media coverage - outside Carlisle anyway. Possibly even in Carlisle. However I'm pretty confident that the question is football related. So whilst i don't know the answer I do know that Balderstone played in the only Carlisle side that played in the top tier. i saw him play for them that season at Filbert Street (1974/75) - a thoughtful, steady inside forward/ mid fielder who would have been excellent if he had had some pace.

I've read that he scored the goal (penalty) which took Carlisle to the top of the First Division - so it may be around that.

You're right, it's Carlisle United related.

Balderstone held their record for the most appearances by an outfield player. Peter Murphy overtook him on Saturday. http://www.newsandstar.co.uk/carlis...eld-appearance-record-at-bournemouth-1.935228

There's an interesting article about him on the Queen of the South website: http://qosfc.com/new_newsview.aspx?newsid=609

Cobb really should score more runs. He's a real asset in one day/twenty20, but needs to get used to getting his head down and batting time in the longer form of the game.

Still have big hopes for him, even if he's not come on in the longer form of the game as much as we would have liked.

Regarding Balderstone in that article on the QoS website, this part is astonishing:

In the game where Leicestershire won their first ever County Championship, on September 15 1975 at Chesterfield, Balderstone was on 51 not out against Derbyshire. After close of play he changed into his football gear to play for Donny in an evening game, a 1-1 draw at home against Brentford. Thus he is the only player to have played League Football and first-class cricket on the same day. As if that wasn’t enough, he then returned to Chesterfield to complete his century the morning after and took three wickets in clinching the championship title. To add to that season`s cricket success another Benson & Hedges trophy was bagged.

Yes - it was quite astonishing even at the time.- but made practical because Queens park Chesterfield not too far from Doncaster of course. Very much towards the end of an era for joint careers. Around the same time Jimmy Bloomfield was telling Graham Cross that he wouldn't be playing for Leicester again because he'd chosen to play for Leics during the summer.

The total commercialisation of football has spoiled all this. If I ran sport in England i would stop all football from the end of April (with exception of FA Cup Final) until the end of August - obviously this would entail the end of participation in the World Cup and European Cup - which would have the added value of reducing anti-social behaviour and the display of flags from chavs cars/ houses.

All out for 86 in the preseason T20 competition semifinals v Warwickshire, and now Hants are 354-3 against us after Day 1 of a 2 day friendly.

And someone has tweeted to Leicsccc suggesting that Buck has gone home.

That's more like it.

Why has Buck gone home? Don't all the squad return soon anyway?

And, where/why is Jefferson not paying in any of these games?

Very funny....James Taylor playing his first first-class match for Notts today, out for a golden duck. Bowler our very own Rob Taylor!

I notice that Greg Smith was in the West Indies with County and didn't play for Durham, has he finished his student days then?

Given his championship performances last year he might want to keep quiet and work on his batting. If he doesn't improve substantially he'll get all the time to play BPL cricket that he needs after 2013.
