8 overs it might have been, but let's celebrate what we can :038:

( despite best efforts of Wayne and his 2 overs for 35!)

A win is a win as they say - and lessons to be learned (which they won't be).

Rank bad captaincy to open with White. Just the bowler Derbys would have chosen. Dagnell commentated that he was right man because "he hit's the ground hard". Absurd! Any decent top order batsman will tell you that a bowler with pace who can't control his line or length is just perfect especially in a limited pver game. White is a fine fielder and a very useful lower middle order bat...but his bowling is non-commercial.

White is going at 10 an over for his 20/20 career. One of Leicestershire most improving and most effective bowlers in the 4 day format, but in limited over cricket he is too expensive especially 20/20. They could of got away with him not bowling yesterday and for sure he shouldn't have bowled the 7th over.

To be fair though I would play White, as batsman and fielder in 20/20 still though. He needs to get his economy rate down to around 8 even better around 7.

I think there is a lot to be said for opening with a spinner sometimes. The less pace the better, it stops batsman from charging the bowler during the powerplay and the batsman has to generate the pace themselves.

Arguably an even worse decision was to bring him back for the penultimate over but luckily the game was pretty much won.

Don't get me wrong, I think he is currently one of the important members of the side (which is relative of course) and has come on a lot in the last two years. It is just this economy rate in Twenty20 which shows no sign of reducing.

Yes in the 4 day game, batsmen will generally play balls on their merit and also let quite a lot of stuff go by outside the off stump. In the shorter formats ,White has been earmarked as one of those bowlers that 'has to go'. On Friday it didn't take much brains to work out that it was wise to open with bowlers who would take pace off the ball.
