I'm no jazz affionado, but its sad to see the demise of such a colourful, larger-than-life character.

Great personality, intellect, writer and raconteur. I like his quote (taken from the Telegragh obit) on growing old:

"The body, like a car, spends more and more time in the garage," he wrote. "Something, though not necessarily serious, is always going wrong. Soon it won’t be worth paying for the repairs."

So true!
