Instead of ridiculous ideas like this they need to realise that our current capitalist, make money and growth at all costs is broken and doesn't work long term.

No disagreement from me there (there's an opinion piece in The Guardian you might find interesting BTW) That said, as much as I agree, sadly this broken system has to be cranked back into some form of life before any replacement could be implemented. Not that it will. We're shortsighted when we want to be and this inherently unjust system suits thems what makes the rules. Some see no need to change it.

And giving everyone £500 to spunk on shit is a sticking plaster that will delay the inevitable.

I love the fact that councils have been ripping off the high street in terms of charging unsustainable rents and now they want to give everyone money to prop the them up, it's so short sighted it's unreal.

Add to the fact that I'm not a wasteful moron who has to fulfil my capitalist needs, and so I don't see why the **** I should have to pay to give everyone £500 to spend on crap they don't need.

Most of the high street is owned by private companies, which in turn pay for pensions as property has been seen as a low risk, long term project for years.
That’s changing rapidly, but something has to kick start the economy.
I don’t think £500 for everyone is that, I agree it’s a sticking plaster, but something’s gotta give!

Not sure about that article. Risks should be balanced likelihood vs cost to implement, which is of course exactly how insurers decide what they’re going to charge.
You can’t get a competitive advantage playing too safe, just as companies that hold too much inventory will eventually die out from over stocking everything.
Also there’s no way that everyone would adhere to ‘the new rules’ when there’s profits to be had from taking that risk
I think we’ll see lots more articles like that one but boy oh boy are they reactive.

Probably is most of the simpletons will spend £500 at Bargain Booze & then spend the Children's £250 at bet365

This is true. Business rates are the method for government kicking the high street in the teeth. It'll be interesting to see where the tax comes from if high streets turn residential and businesses don't spunk unnecessary money on offices.

Council tax because it’ll get turned into residential!
Can see retail slowly dying out, but high streets will fight to keep food and coffee joints cos that’s the only growth space on the high street anyway.
And the world’s changed. It’s much more experience focussed. Years ago a bowling joint got knocked down in Leicester (megabowl?), now we have one and another being built.

Cities are changing.

This will definitely, definitely happen. FACT

Just like it does with their benefits, the lazy feckless scrounging bastards

An average high street shop as a house paying council tax would provide nowhere near the revenue a shop paying rates would. Even a tiny shop with an RV of 10k you'd lose about £4k.

I once heard a story about a man on the dole who had six jobs and lived in a mansion and he would take his dole money and buy a big bag of drugs and a new telly every day and spend the night watching porn and shagging a harem of sex workers then he’d get up and do it again the next day, the scrounging druggie bastard

anyone who claims benefits should automatically be told to **** off and die and then thrown in prison for being a liar

I've heard similar so it's definitely true.

This is all very apt. & potentially useful info. The firm I work for declared bankruptcy this morning. I got a phone call telling me so at 9:40am. Nobody knows where the actual boss is. The call was from my manager. He got his call half an hour earlier. He congratulated me on my career at the company being half an hour longer than his. Gallows humour. I've spent the day making a Universal Credit claim.

Exciting stuff. I only have a 32" telly. Does anyone here know when I get my 55" upgrade? & will it be 4K or plain old HD? I'm hoping for something Smart. Preferably Sony. I like Sony.

Still, never mind. 55 years old. Can't walk unaided. Beginning of the biggest economic recession since the Jarrow March. My prospects seem good.

Just have to wait for them to push my pension back to 70 now.

Living the dream in the 21st century.

But hey...Brexit in January! YAY! Sunlit uplands.

Thank god for that. I'm saved.

(I'm also pissed)

There has been speculation that everyone in the country will be given a £500 voucher to spend in shops. That's the one you're thinking of.

Quite wide of the mark it turns out. We're getting offered Meerkat Meals Monday-Wednesday.

Liking your post didn’t feel right.

but you know what I meant.

maybe you could exaggerate your limp a bit, that may be enough to get you a 60” TV rather than the 55”.
