I don't think the minutes silence is the big issue. At school now we're selling ridiculous amounts poppy based paraphernalia that isn't even poppies. There's snap-bands and rubber bracelets and lanyards, all pouring money into th RBL. It's become about how many poppies you can cram into you.

Never bought a poppy for years, always thought that if a country sends it's people off to war it should look after them properly when they get back.

What was it before it wasn't available?

A porn site tweeted a picture of a solemn looking lady and paying respects to the fallen with a mixture of remembrance and milf related hashtags.

Weirdly, we make many players of nationalities whose families we killed in conflicts stand there solemnly

I was never in the armed forces but I was moved by the event as I noticed were other people around me including two gentlemen who I know did serve in the armed forces.

Brown Nose has, perhaps inadvertently raised a couple of interesting questions. When did it become cool to denigrate your own armed forces?
Does trying to be cool excuse not bothering with facts?

BN did get one thing right. The nature of Remembrance Day has changed. It is now about making sure we remember what happened. BNs post shows how easy it is to get things wrong.

Who are the players of different nationalities whose families we killed? I will concentrate on European wars since I am not qualified to write on Africa or Asia
Ricardo is Portuguese From 1808 onward British troops died defending Portugal from against an expansionist dictator called Napoleon.
Soyuncu is Turkish. In 1854 British troops died defending Turkey from the expansionist Tsar Nicholas I
Tielemans and Praet are Belgian. In 1914 and 1940 British troops died after the Kaiser and Hitler invaded Belgium. (Surely even BN has heard of Hitler)
Schmeichel is Danish. Denmark was freed from German rule by a coalition that included British troops.

Obviously we can only guess about the wars in our own time. My feeling is that we were right in Kosovo and wrong in the 2nd Iraq War. This however can only be a guess.

I have a question for BN. :Leaving aside the silence and the marches - Why did he choose to be selectively negative about the record of the British army?

I think there is a difference between what remembrance day is supposed to be and what it has become. I often hear it referred to as 'poppy day' and more than once have had to explain its meaning to someone who was wearing a poppy solely because they were expected to.

We now see clubs having their novelty poppy day a week before remembrance day because they are expected to do something rather than any genuine feeling, add to that men in silly poppy costumes and I can't see how such an event is supposed to respect anyone or influence society. I can see how it influences the bank balance of a particular charity though.

Not that the British legion doesn't deserve support, but so do hundreds of charities.

Remembrance day was always supposed to be different.

Giving to charities for many allows them to ease their consciences by paying to forget. I am not sure anyone wants remembrance day to be like children in need or red nose day with novelty mascots attempting to entertain money out of people.

Good post but quite selective. Robert Huth was German, was he not?

I'm afraid that it is your post that is selective David, not mine.

I specifically made a very clear point of highlighting my personal respect for the actions of those that served in the first and second world wars. I solemnly observed a two minute silence on Monday and I ensured that my teenage daughter (with poppy) understood why she was doing the same at her school.

I did choose to be selectively critical about the bloated and largely irrelevant Royal British Legion, the absurdity of the Remembrance Day fixture at football matches and the potentially disrespectful impact this could have on many football players. I stand by those criticisms. None of those criticisms have anything to do with the British Army.

Your one-sided plucking of largely irrelevant historical encounters didn't prove a thing and didn't address any of these points.
