Looking at hanging my phone. I have had iPhones since the 3G but looking at making a switch to something else on this occasion.

HTC One looks vey decent but reviews between this and the Galaxy S4 are neck and neck. Really don't like the plasticky feel of the Samsung.

Any thoughts? Anybody used iPhone + another?

Are you getting a subsidised phone with a new contract or just buying the handset? If you are paying for the handset I'd recommend buying the Nexus 4 direct from Google because it'll save you around £300 and has decent specifications.

If you are getting a new contract there is little to choose between the One and the S4 except the Samsung launcher software is annoying and the One can't take an sd card to increase the memory.

It'll be on an O2 contract so the up front cost is not an issue. I hand considered the Nexus at all, may be worth a read.

Might go for the HTC just for the change. With the O2 refresh it will not necessarily be for two years anyway.

I did have the N4, I think it was mentioned on here briefly, but sold it a while back as the battery life was a big issue for me not lasting a working day if not doing much work.

Excellent screen and a very quick handset from my experience though does get very hot if gaming or watching a video. WiFi and 3G speeds noticeably quicker than my S2 which I downgraded too and the screen really is great.

Worth noting no SD card slot if expanded storage is a biggie for you and there are other Google Edition phones due soon but depends if you want latest tech or something a bit cheaper as the N4 is excellent value for money compared to rivals.

Don't go for the N4 if you are getting a subsidised handset.

Google edition one and S4 cost a fortune, took a look on the google store when I was in the USA last week where they've just been released.

In my experiences, Samsung is better than HTC which are both better than iPhone. I have a Galaxy 3 and it's the first phone I've not got sick of after 6 months. I had a HTC Desire HD and had to root it as the HTC software wound me up. No SD card would be a killer for me.

I've had the S3 for about 9 months and hate all the Samsung bloatware on it but can't be bothered to root it and install some cleaner firmware, HTC launcher seems better to me as well, suppose you just have to find something you can live with

Samsung does have a lot of shit on it as well, I agreement I found the HTC stuff more annoying though, but that's just personal preference, as you say.

Touchwiz always annoyed me the most and never seemed as clean cut and nice looking as sense. Always felt that HTC seem like a better build quality too though never had a major issue from any smartphone so hardly as if any are bad, just Samsungs usually feel more plasticy from my experience.

Rooting is really simple, well it was for me on my S2 so I would imagine it would be very similar for the S3, but if it's pure or the latest Android you want then that is where the N4 and other Google Edition handsets will come in to play as they will have no bloatware and will receive updates to the latest version of Android first with no faffing or geeking about required.

It entirely depends on what the customer sees as priorities for them and how much they are willing to pay for what they want as there isn't one handset that is the best. I was only fussed about being able to browse, e-mail, stream media but then wanted something with an extendable battery and good community support. Top end phones now would be complete overkill for me and would therefore be an unnecessary expense too but it entirely depends on what you want from the phone.

I have a Sony Xperia T and I reckon it's the dogs nobs. I'm not much of a smartphone affiacondo, but the T lets me upload pictures of my Mrs onto the GameForItGrannies website in seconds flat. It also has a really responsive touch screen.
