Am I safe to assume this isn't the case then?
Afraid it is true

Perhaps Vards has got his mind distracted during this barren spell? Despite his assists he really is missing the easiest of chances at the moment. £900k is a hell of a lot of money, and rising. If they aren't careful they could easily go bankrupt.

Coleen Rooney and Rebekah Vardy’s libel case has amassed “extraordinarily large” legal fees, including up to £32,000 for an “Instagram expert”, the High Court has heard.

The two footballers’ wives have been locked in a legal dispute since October 2019, when Mrs Rooney shared a social media post suggesting that Mrs Vardy's Instagram account was the source of leaked stories to the media.

The post, which was dubbed “Wagatha Christie”, went viral and prompted legal proceedings from Mrs Vardy, wife of the England striker Jamie Vardy, who is suing Mrs Rooney, wife of former footballer Wayne Rooney, for libel.

Today the High Court heard that Mrs Vardy’s overall legal budget has reached £897,000, while Mrs Rooney's estimated costs are £402,312.

Mrs Vardy is seeking to instruct an “Instagram expert” for the trial, which will cost between £32,000 and £22,000, written submissions to the court said. The expert will inform the court on how the social media platform operates, including how posts are shared, how long they remain accessible and how to block followers.

At the preliminary hearing, Mrs Rooney's barrister John Samson asked the court to reject the cost budget “because, in the words of my lay client, it is grotesque".

Mr Samson told Judge Roger Eastman that the sums involved were "huge", telling the court that "the claimant's budget to date, including incurred costs, is double that of the defendant".

Sara Mansoori, for Mrs Vardy, said her client's £897,000 budget "reflects the complexity, scope and scale of the legal and factual issues".

She added: "Mrs Vardy's cost budget reflects the very serious nature of the highly damaging defamatory allegation made against her - which continues to be published by Mrs Rooney.

"It has caused enormous distress to Mrs Vardy and led to her being targeted by hostile and abusive online messages, as well as causing extreme upset and anxiety to members of her family.

"It was necessary to take steps to seek to understand the allegations made by Mrs Rooney, which involved technical expertise, as well as to seek to resolve the dispute.

"Regrettably this was not possible and further costs have been incurred in pursuing the claim to this stage."

The judge said both Mrs Vardy and Mrs Rooney's legal budgets were "extraordinarily large" and asked them to try to settle the case. He also gave the parties until June to file revised cost budgets.

The hearing is part of the ongoing legal dispute between the two wives, who failed to settle the case out of court after months of private mediation.

Mrs Vardy denies the accusations made by Mrs Rooney and is suing her for damages for libel, arguing that the post implies a breach of trust.

The case continues.

I'm no legal expert, but I suspect that cost has been vastly inflated to scare the sh*t out of Coleen (given that those costs could be awarded against her) and get her to settle out of court with a fully apology.

It's pocket money to both of them

Five weeks wages for Mr. Vardy.

I suspect that any of us would settle for a bill of similar for a court case.

About £2.5k for an average worker.

Seems to be some disagreement on the numbers. From the Mirror:

According to skeleton arguments filed today the case will cost both parties a total of £897,000 - with Rooney's share £465,842 and Mrs Vardy's £402,312.

Those numbers don’t add up either, so.. who knows.
