My laptop has three usb2 ports and one usb 3 port. The usb ports have been used for an external mouse, external keyboard, 2 external drives and to transfer from a camcorder. I have never found a use for the usb 3 port.

It is on its last legs and I am going to get a new laptop. However, most of them seem to gave three usb3 ports and only one usb 2 port. A friend tells me I can use usb 3 for usb 2 devices but he does not know much more than me. Is he right? Even using a hub will not solve the problem since the camcorder usb is attached to the machine rather than being on a lead - it needs a port of its own.

How are other people with usb 2 devices managing this problem.

USB 3 is backwards compatible with USB 2. The physical connection for the standard size plugs is the same

What Mackster said - shit loads faster for everything, your camcorder will transfer faster etc.
