It's astounding how some people would rather take less money from a foreign team, than more money from a team in our division who we ultimately won't really be competing with.

Our goal this season is to qualify for the Europa League.
There's a good chance that's all Arsenal will achieve this season as they probably won't make top 4.
That makes them a rival...
Alright we might not realistically be likely to finish above Arsenal, but surely by selling our most talented player to them then we only reduce the likeliness of us competing with them?
We could achieve Europa League qualification through a cup competition, where Arsenal would also be a rival.

I do understand what you're saying, but let's say we don't sell him to Arsenal - we sell him to Roma at less than Arsenal will pay. Then Arsenal might sign Lemar from Monaco (or whoever) and they might rip up the league more than Mahrez would.
We could sell Mahrez to Roma, and end up in another relegation dog fight, in which case Arsenal aren't a rival.
It's all a bunch of what if's. Sell to the highest bidder.

So why did we play them twice then? Why were they competing for the same same trophies and money as us. Of course they were rivals.

We were not rivals for the title as it turned out, but we still had to play them, and Kanté, twice. Hence, they were one of our rivals.
And what about the season before? By your logic, Arsenal weren't our rivals that season either.
