Puel out

A bit like your post then.

Not really as no one has ever expected us to finish as high as 5th this season and the top target since Puel took over would have been 6th.

Seems you just like to be negative all the time for some reason.

I’m sure the expectations are closer to 5th than 19th.

My expectation was 6-8th, where we lie now given the management changes is perfectly acceptable and as a club we should be delighted with this (overall).

Given the introduction of Puell I fully expect the owners to set a target (given decent recruitment in the summer) of 5-7th and I fully expect us to improve on this season even by one place.

We are building and bar the injection of 100’s of millions of pounds I prefer our approach as the club still feels mine. We still have an identity and this is required for the REAL fan base to be able to attach to and empathise with and for it to feel ‘our own’.

We are doing it correctly but we MUST be patient and not chop and change managers.

Puell is no fool and to me I am seeing him trying new systems and players and as other posters far more elequent than me have pointed out- the only way to do this is to accept the impetuosity and naivety of youth.

Imagine in 2-3 years time if we are in the champions league again and players such as Chilwell, Choudry and do on are the ones in the first team - how fantastic would that be rather than a team of players who have cost £500 million pounds. Success is attained at a price and to me the price I am willing to pay is step by step progress.

If some want boom then fair enough but bust inevitably follows.

We are building tremendously well in my opinion.

Southampton have just sacked Pellegrino. I'm sure the Saints fans who were saying 'Puel Out' are very happy.

I think this thread needs resurrecting. We play lots more passes these days but go nowhere. I'm genuinely bored of watching us.

I completely understand what the Southampton fans were saying last season.

Yes we could say “well I bet they wish they still had Puel now” considering their current position. But just because they made a shocking managerial appointment as his replacement doesn’t change anything for me.

Get him out now.

He doesn't deserve any time. We have far better players than Newcastle and he should be able to construct a side to get more than one shot on target. The fact that Mahrez and Vardy were so lacking in influence demonstrates he hasn't got a clue.

What a tragic waste of the best collection of attacking resources the club has had in a generation.

Morgan touches the ball more than our attacking players. That in and of itself is grounds for dismissal as it shows a complete lack of understanding of the basics of football.

Shit.

How about get the underperforming untouchables out the team and let the manager build a new side, which desperately needs doing

Problem is he's setting them up to fail. We play so slowly up the pitch and by the time Mahrez, Albrighton or Chilwell look to put a cross into the gargantuan Vardy he's surrounded by 6 defenders.

Remember when Pea Son had that Eureka moment when he suddenly thought trying to win games might be a better way to win games than just accepting you'll probably lose? Reckon Mr Puelis needs to bump his head on the toilet seat or whatever it takes.

That happens with most teams. Defenders have more space than the other players, so they get the ball more.
For example, in the match currently being played:

Otamendi 81 touches
Kompany 66

Sane 40
Sterling 32
Bernardo Silva 26

If the quality of the football is not what we should judge the manager on, it should be his results.

I would strongly argue that Puel and Shakespeare have had sufficient 'tools' at their disposal to finish 7th this season. We have a large squad with proven quality and depth. We pay the 7th highest wages, etc, etc.

Shakespeare had 21 league games, and averaged 1.38 points per game. Over an entire season, this would have given us 52 points. Quite rightly, this was not deemed to be good enough.

Puel has had 23 league games, and has averaged 1.48 points per game. Over a season, this would give us 56 points. However, this includes a very strong start. His last 15 games have returned 17 points (1.13 per game).

Puel averaged 1.21 points per game last season at Southampton (they got 46 points).

Over the last four seasons, the average points required for 7th place is 62 (1.63 per game). Given their comments and actions, I think it's fair to say that this sort of return is the owners minimum expectation.

In pure points terms, he's got to get a minimum of 10 points from the last 6 games to have any argument that he merits a chance to start next season in charge. To deliver the 1.63 over 29 games, he needs to pick up 13 points out of 18.

My guess is that Puel will finish the season with stats no better than Shakespeare had. If so, I cannot see any chance that he'll survive.

Nowt to do with players themselves, then?
