Steve Howey has signed a one year contract with Leicester. The 31 year old central defender has joined from Man City for an undisclosed fee.

Sunderland born Howey started his career as a trainee at Newcastle and spent over 10 years at the club before joining Manchester City for £3,000,000 in August 2000.

He started the 2002-2003 season as a first team player, but lost his place midway through the season and hasn't played since a 5-1 defeat to Arsenal in February.

Micky Adams had this to say about his first signng of the summer: "We are delighted to be getting Steve on board. He is a former international defender with proven Premiership experience and will be a good addition to the squad"

The following comes from Man City's official website:
Steve Howey signed for Newcastle at the age of fourteen and had only ever played for one club until Joe Royle brought him to Maine Road to strengthen the defence for the Premiership campaign.

The central defender, who won four caps for England in the mid 1990s, was dogged by several well publicised injury problems, including a torn achilles which he suffered in Newcastle's FA Cup semi final against Spurs in 1998.

The fee was an initial £2m rising to £3m depending on appearances.

If the former England intrnational was bitterly disappointed by relegation to the First Division he was equally pleased to have played so many games in his first season as a Blue. In a carreer that has been dogged by injury he was a constant in the City defence throughout the season.

He broke a toe in a tackle when City lost to Spurs in early February, but with the help of pre-match injections he was able to play despite the injury.

The central defender came second in the Supporter's choice for Player of the Year.

Steve Howey had played under Kevin Keegan at Newcastle in fact it was the Blues boss who was responsible for converting the player from a striker to a defender. Has proved invaluable in the heart of the City defence in the push for promotion.

Was ever present in the City side and took over the capatain's armband when Ali Benarbia was left out for the win at Birmingham. But a recurrence of a foot injury forced him out of the defeat at Wigan in the Worthington Cup and he subsequently missed the chance to captain the side in the derby victory in November.

Bounced back to form in the win over Bolton at the end of November and headed home the first goal of the game, his first of the season.

Followed up that goal with the opener for City against Tottenham Hotspur in Christmas week but the Blues squandered their lead and lost to the North London outfit.

Dropped from the starting line up for the first time by Kevin Keegan in the game at Blackburn at the opening of March after being part of a defence which leaked five goals to a rampant Arsenal the week before.

Steve Howey failed to win back a place in the squad and for the first time in his City career was relegated to the reserves. He had asked not to travel to the game against Chelsea in mid March which resulted in the boss sidelining him for the rest of the season.

What a signing! If he's good enough for Newcastle and Man City, he's good enough for me.

Anyone know how much he is earning?

Do you think he will take Taggarts place, or Elliotts place in the starting 11?

I think it might be Petrescu. :) :) ;)

It would seem that when you vote in a poll then the thread is marked as though someone has posted in that thread. Thus I went to view the results of the poll and the only person's name I saw is that of Petrescu(-e sp?:102: ) as having voted.

As this is a new system it is also the first time that we have this kind of name being attached to a poll. I have made the assumption that as Petrescu's name was the only one present that he must be the one that voted in the poll and so bumped this thread up to the top of the forum. :) :) ;)

Right i see, it does not explain the significance of voting as to whether howey was a good signing or not???

I forgot to vote No? :icon_eek:

Steven is right and this can be switched off :)

It can be switched off, but I'm not going to switch it off because it's more sensible to leave it switched on.

If someone starts a poll that people vote on, but don't reply to, with this feature switched off it would disappear from the first page of threads fairly quickly. If each vote brings it back to the top it will stay live for longer.
The only problem is if people vote on polls that are two years old, and you'd have to be pretty sad (with dejection) to do somethig like that. And that can be avoided by closing a poll automatically after a certain time.
