To be fair, I don't think England are playing too badly, except for Danny Rose who is dogshit. My 18 month old Grandson has a better final ball. But this is a really poor Dutch side, so hard to judge England properly.

That dopey lump up front for them is something special

Danny Rose isn't a footballer. If he is, we should all be given a go.

He's only made 6 appearances for Spuds all season.
Vardy on - he should fill his boots here.
Be nice if he actually touched the ball. Are the England players only passing to their mates or something.

The Dutch are poor though. Cruyff wouldn't believe it if he was alive, 3 years since he died tomorrow.

It’s been like that for Vards many times when playing for England. Because I’m usually watching him closely when he plays for England you clearly notice how others are simply missing the chance to play through balls or anticipating his runs and passing it backwards instead. And they definitely are a selfish lot wanting their own moment of glory in front of goal instead of passing.

If he is to be a plan B/impact player off the bench in the summer then Southgate has to tell the team to adapt their style to capitalise.

And before someone says he should adapt, he didn’t score 80+ goals for us and get in the England team by becoming a link-up man.

It really is painful watching England play, simply boring.

From Phil McNumpty in his match report on the BBC webpage

"Lingard's eye for goal will be key for Southgate's plans - before he scored, injured Tottenham captain Harry Kane had netted seven of England's previous 14 goals.

England carried plenty of threat with the pace and running of Lingard, his Manchester United team-mate Rashford and Manchester City's Raheem Sterling - but Southgate will be grateful to have another natural goalscorer to augment Kane's threat."

So that's it then, Vardy

It's all very strange. I have absolutely zero interest in the world cup. When I think back to how thrilled by it I was as a kid & then later watching processions of truly great players & memorable matches I'm amazed at how it's all changed.

Maybe it's because England are so embarrassingly useless. Maybe it's because it just seems like a month long ad for Muckdonalds & Coke. Maybe it's because most of the better players seem like a bunch of ****s.Maybe it's because it's in Russia. Maybe it's because of something else.

I don't know. I just know I couldn't give a **** anymore..

If nobody comes to their senses & abandons the idea of having the next one staged inside an aircon unit built by slave labour in a medieval kingdom at the wrong time of year then I imagine a lot of other people will end up feeling the same.

To be honest if they announced tomorrow that this woukd be the last one I wouldn't give a shit.

Is it because there’s too much football on the TV now, too?

When I was a kid, having a match on the box on a Sunday was a relative rarity, so watching all those matches in a short space of time felt like something different and exciting.

It feels like it to me, anyway, as there’s so much football on the tele, that it takes away the novelty factor.

Plus England are often boring as shit to watch.

Yes, like most of the qualifying matches, it was just a moderately competent day at the office, talentwise England are way down on even the dismal standard of the last fifty years - only one player with even pretensions to being world class and him with a dodgy ankle, still there's always Panama.

It is a bit disorientating that I gird myself up every four years to cheer on the "lads" (at least when they qualify), rationalising it by thinking it's nice occasionally to support a team with even an outside chance of winning something. Seems I got that one wrong.
