The BBC app has an article titled ‘How Mourinho’s tactics - on and off the pitch - got Man Utd off to the perfect start’.

I haven’t read it, nor the one wanking off over Pogba.

Re: the right back situation - I'm sure Ricardo will be playing right back most of the time.

I put last night's right side down to Ghezzal not having trained enough with the team yet, and us wanting to be more solid down that side.

But agree that in that situation Simpson should've played. I'm hoping last night will show Puel that he needs to keep Simpson around as the back up.

But I think part of the reason he might prefer Amartey there is pace.

The reports this morning are horrible, a real indicator of how the media actually want the big teams to win week in week out.

Simpson has given away penalties before.

Can I just check which one good chance you're talking about?
  • The one we scored from?
  • Vardy's fluffed volley?
  • Maddison's turn and shot that forced a great save from De Gea in the first half?
  • The penalty we should've had when Bailly fouled Iheanacho in the second half?
  • The shot Gray had saved after Vardy won the ball from Shaw on the wing?

Or a different only one good chance? Because they all seemed pretty good ones to me.

Maddison’s chance was tough, as was Gray’s. A penalty not given isn’t a chance. Vardy’s volley was the only chance we had that we should score.

So if Iheanacho hadn't been fouled by Bailly you don't think he would've got a shot away?

Maddison and Gray were difficult but still good chances after the space had been created.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Silva; I thought he had one of his best games in a City shirt. He wasn't spectacular, but always involved. I can see him becoming as automatic a starter as Ndidi, on this performance.

On the BBC round up this morning they did not even show the City goal.

Apart from the one we scored you mean?

Yes, apart from the one we scored.

Amazing how people have leapt on a post with the temerity to suggest weren’t brilliant. We weren’t. I’ve seen people elsewhere claiming we were the better team. We weren’t. It’s okay as well - we were away at one of the best sides in the league.

“If”. He was fouled so he didn’t. That’s all that matters. You can pick plenty of such moments all over the pitch from any given match. I don’t care if you disagree with my assessment of the match - it’s what the place is for. But that’s straw clutching.

I disagree on the quality of those two chances. They were okay but not ones I’d expect to be scored most of the time.

We’ll see if I’m right or wrong as the season progresses. But I honestly saw nothing last night to suggest we’ve sorted our creativity problem. Yes, we were mostly very good in possession between the boxes, and I also think we looked more solid defensively than at the back end of last season. I don’t think we’ll struggle and we ought to be good enough for a top ten finish.

I just happen to think it will be boring to watch. After the way Puel set us up for much of his time here last season I think I’m entitled to be sceptical. My view of him doesn’t get reset because it’s a new season. If the evidence tells me I’m wrong in the coming weeks I’ll be delighted.

I'm not questioning your summary of our performance although I may not agree with it. That's your opinion and as valid as anyone else's. I'm disagreeing with the 'fact' that we had only one chance. This is simply not true. We scored a goal and should have had 2 more.

I agree on the creativity bit but surely you saw a marked down fferemce in our play yesterday verses what we were served up in the last half of last season?

I thought he was incredibly frustrating. He did some lovely things and showed a couple of good touches but he still gave the ball away far too easily at times and in dangerous positions. He was also caught in possession too many times. It was better than we have seen from him in most games but he was still one of our weakest links at times.

For once I agree Homer. It seems we are happy to accept defeat simply because it's Man U. Had that been, for example, Everton, the verdict would have been less sympathetic.
man utd will struggle to make the top 4 this season, there keeper is worth 15 - 20 pts a season he was superb last night.

Thought it was a good performance, impressed with Ricardo, we must play a back three to allow him and Chilwell to support the midfield, Maddison had a good debut and Gray had a good start. Oh by the way I thought that the assistant manager had left??

I think having a player who can pass a ball 5m might persuade Puel not play Simpson.

Yes and I’ve said so. We look more comfortable in possession and we move quicker through the first two thirds. I’ve also said that I like the look of Puel’s transfer business. I’m just yet to be convinced that those things will be enough to give us an entertaining team to watch.

At the moment it’s a sample of a single game with new personnel so I don’t know either way. But my assessment of the game is that United were in control for most of it. We had a lot of the ball but United controlled the space in the way that Mourinho sides do.

I’ll admit that I’m going to take a lot of convincing that we are going to be anything but a bit dull to watch, albeit comfortably so. I can’t stress enough how much I’d like to be wrong. I pay too much money on watching us to want to be right.
