I think he would have at least remembered it was a football match rather than a game of volleyball. Simpson gets a bad press here sometimes - he's a better RB than Amartey without doubt.
I agree Simpson better, but I also agree there’s value in persisting with Amartey for a while at least. I don’t know that defence is what he’s built for, but if the manager sees him that way I won’t argue. Hasn’t the world changed a lot since 2016, when some were seriously calling Simpson the best right back in the country?

I can’t work out whether by being on the piss in Edinburgh last night I missed a decent performance, or a shit one? Whether we created chances, or not?

Quite confusing, really. I know people have differing opinions and obviously that’s fine, but they seem to vary pretty markedly, in here.

Well I've given a positive summary and I'm usually a miserable wanker so take that however you like.

I personally think those who don't think we were decent or certainly miles better than last season, are broken.

As relates to Amartey, and this won’t be a popular opinion, he should probably start a run of games.

To Brown Noses point earlier this week: it’s a very young inexperienced team and loads of naive mistakes are going to get made. If we bomb out players after their first poor game/bad mistake this season we won’t have any left by Christmas. I know Amartey has a bit more history behind him, but so does Puel and I’ve been reliably informed by this forum that this is a season for second chances.

If he’s in the side because the full strength team isn’t ready, that’s one thing and he can be dropped. If Puel sees him as integral, then he needs to be treated as such even if he had a balls up in the first game.

Basically, drop him now and I think you lose him forever. I’d let the lad play his way out of it.
I would agree if it was his first ever game at right back. But it wasn’t. He showed last season what a liability he is at right back - the home game against Man United springs to mind. It’s not his fault though, because he’s being played out of position.

But to be honest I’m not quite sure what his position is.

Completely disagree.
which part the fact that Mahrez would often we walking barely in his own half
or that Gray several times raced back to our own by line making tackles? Because both are true, there were times Riyad got back but they were few and far between

and when he came back into the side at right back he was playing really well prior to his hamstring injury.

The club seem to have finally decided he is a right back, that's the only place Puel has used him

I must have missed those games.

I’ve just watched the full game. My tin hat is at the ready, but I think Amartey was a little unlucky. I could see what he was trying to do on using his shoulder and it just dropped a little low and hit his arm. It was definitely a penalty but I don’t think it was as brain dead as some do.

It's started already. Manchester United are 'complete shite'. Utter ****ing madness. Is it the same kind of 'shite' we were told Manchester City were all season last year when they won the league at a canter smashing a plethora of records on the way? It seems since winning the league that every team we play is 'shite' or 'there for the taking'.

They're not 'shite'. They finished as league runners-up last year on 81 points, as many as we got when we won the title. They may be frustrating and play a brand of football that is ****ing dull as dishwater but they are in no way 'shite'. The perspective of some on here really needs adjusting.

While overall agreeing with your post I would say that in terms of what that team should be capable of they are not that good.

I agree that we were never really expected to get much of anything from that game and Man U certainly aren't shite, they should be nailed on for top 6 at the very least but I disagree about Amartey. Penalty was misjudged at best (pretty poor in itself, especially so early on shows a lack of concentration) but his over all performance was really bad, dispossessed and misplacing passes in the backline on numerous occasions. His booking was actually good play, Wes Morgan left him in the shit and he sort of had no choice to commit the foul and stop a potential counter at that time.

Over all it was an encouraging performance but it just highlights that there are a few players who are weak links in an otherwise strong side. Personally, I think our strongest line up would be this.

Schmeichel
Ricardo Soyuncu/Benkovic Maguire Chilwell
Ghezzal Maddison Ndidi Gray
Iheanacho Vardy

Puel seems to be keen on playing Ricardo in midfield and he was great there yesterday but he's also our best RB by a country mile and we have others who could play RM and hopefully do a decent job such as Ghezzal and Albrighton.

Maddison is an out and out 10 not a CM and wee need to get over this obsession with 442 it limits how we can play, a diamond midfield with the full backs bombing on could work to get 2 strikers in and Maddison behind but flat 442 will have him too deep away from where he is dangerous

In terms of what I could look like, I'm one handsome bastard. Anyone who knows me will tell you why that's not a fit comparison.

Time will tell if they are 'that good' but last night they controlled the game very well. Like I say, they got 81 points last year, the same as we did when we won the league. They really are a very good side who play mind-numbingly dull football.

United played how they did because that what Jose does, he got a lead and sat on it they were capable of playing better but didn't need to

Whilst I agree he is a number 10, if we persist with 4-4-2 then I can see him slotting into central midfield simply because our other midfielders aren't good enough at present to feed him. You are right in that it would be a waste of his creativity but he's having to come so deep anyway to pick up the ball sometimes that it may be better for him to play the role DD did in some games. You're also right in that a change of shape is a better option and one that will facilitate Maddison's creativity as an out and out no.10.

I never said that was a flat 4, I'd have thought it pretty obvious that Ndidi would have more of a holding role giving Maddison license to get forward i.e. a diamond.

Personally I think we should stick with 4-4-2 and variants of it. It's the most solid formation without sacrifing too much up going forward such as in a 5-4-1 or 5-3-2. 3-5-2 is the only other one that could work well for us but you're asking a lot of running each game from Chilwell and Ricardo to get both forward and back constantly for 90 minutes and I just think it leaves you open too much to a counter attack down the flanks when possession is turned over quickly.

The first bit. Riyad did more defensive work than you’ll ever give him credit for but let’s just leave it at that.

If you’d spent tens of thousands of pounds on plastic surgery and looked like how United played I’d take the piss of you as well. Even if you did pull.

the players you picking in the midfield you put would be a flat 442 and if Maddison left NDidi to attack Wilf would be slaughtered by the opposition so it wouldn't work.

442 worked because of Kante, the moment he left we needed to change, wee have wasted 2 years trying to carry on with it 4231 might not be my personal pick but it is a much better system for us that 442 is

Maddison’s chance was tough, as was Gray’s. A penalty not given isn’t a chance. Vardy’s volley was the only chance we had that we should score.
Are you having a laugh? Technically that was an INCREDIBLY difficult chance, coming at him at some speed and at an awkward angle.
