What’s wrong with Rodgers (beyond him being a bit weird/dodgy)?
He’s achieved virtually nothing as a manager. The best thing he’s ever done was Swansea. Total shite at Reading. Sacked by Liverpool with zero trophies to his name. Any Celtic manager who doesn’t piss the league by March deserves to never work in football again so nothing he does up there counts.

Totally agree.

I couldn't agree more. Replacing Puel with Rogers is like curing your gonorrhoea with a dose of syphilis.

well I think he’d be ok. So there.
Closest to winning the title of any Liverpool manager for the last 25 years.

Did absolute wonders at Swansea.

Can’t judge what he’s doing at Celtic because even my grandma could win the SPL for Celtic, and she’s dead.

Like you I think he’d be ok. He wouldn’t be my first choice, and probably wouldn’t be my second or third choice. But I think some of the views on here and through the footballing community are somewhat harsh.

If we had a vacancy and appointed Rodgers he’d be a fine appointment but he’s not someone I’d sack Puel for

I am not saying Rodgers is a footballing messiah but for the current group of players we have and the vision we have as a club I think he is a really good fit, he has a good record of developing young players, he plays good football but with a purpose and energy which would suit our current squad and he has decent premier league and European experience. I also think he is a realistic option for where we are as a club.

For everybody who is slating the suggestion, I would love to know who their choice would be and why?

Not really given it much thought, but then again I’m not the one paid to do these things. It’s a tough place we’re in because if you sack Puel you’re making a statement that you want to move from being an upper mid table club to one challenging realistically for top six. That means getting in someone who has a track record, or picking someone obscure and hoping they turn out to be the next Alex Ferguson. Booting Puel then buying out Rodgers’ contract is spending a lot of money to tread the exact same water.

Other Premier League managers are of course a possibility. Benitez I like but is he what we want? I don’t know. Does he still want to manage a football club after Newcastle? Either way I’d much prefer him over Rodgers. Would Sean Dyche or Eddie Howe even answer the phone?

Someone like Graham Potter? Potter himself would be a pricey gamble too, since he just joined Swansea this summer, but there’s sense in looking to people who have transformed small clubs into bigger ones.

A big name? Would they take the job seriously or would it be another Eriksson just pissing away money on League One-level dross?

I’d want someone who has not only a clear destination in mind but also a detailed roadmap for getting there. Having not interviewed any potential candidates I’m as clueless as anyone else.

I agree that it's not a simple move to make.

Our owners made two calls for managers - Sousa and Sven. Both were poor moves so they appear to have taken a back seat ever since. Vichai interviewed Ranieri and Puel only after they'd been identified and interviewed once already.

At some point during NPs second spell, Rudkin assumed control over all such matters. I think it's well known that NP and Rudkin didn't get on. It would be natural if Rudkin wanted easy going characters to deal with after that experience. Ranieri, Shakespeare and Puel are not confrontational types. All are/were malleable. These managers have all had limited control over things like transfers and contracts as power has gradually shifted from the Manager to the Director of Football. Remember that all three of these men even had to accept certain backroom staff members being untouchable when they took over.

I think we need a strong man in charge next. Someone that will push the club forwards. But I doubt that Rudkin will want that so we are in a bit of limbo unless the owners are prepared to make a change there too. And I can't see it.

After his Newcastle experience, Benitez wouldn't come here without a lot of control and I can't see him getting it. Rodgers had little influence over this sort of thing at Liverpool but I doubt whether he'd want to do that again here. Dyche is also a manager that would demand control over more than we want to give out nowadays. Even someone like Allardyce would think twice about coming here I think.

Without a new approach we'd have to go for a foreign coach type that would accept his role as being 'head coach'.

Oh for the days when Martin George had his little black book of talented managers that he went to whenever the need arose. He was very good at it.

Allardyce wouldn't be an appointment that would excite or suggest a long term strategy. However, I think he's a very good manager and is treated unbelievably harshly.

He has done excellent rescue and improve jobs over and over again. His England departure was a nonsense. He'd be great for our younger players, educating them on how to defend and how to manage games.

There is also a good chance that he'd bring back Shakespeare and Walsh which would not be a bad thing. All in all, he is another that I'd much prefer to the present incumbent. I'd bet on us getting quite a few more points over a season with him than Puel.

he would end Vardy's Leicester career for a start he never plays with a smaller striker, Sam Allerdyce is very good at what he does, but for those who complain of boring negative football he would be the worst appointment you could make as that is what he does.

He is also completely different to what the owners want, they don't want defensive hoofball

I can't stand Fat Sam but he'd look to get results. Most teams he's managed have played grim football but that's mainly due to resources. Was it Wham he had playing half decent stuff?

Bolton played some decent stuff to them but that was a long time ago, he was expected to produce more than that at Everton, with Shakey and Walsh btw, and all he really did was argue with their fans and board, play shit turgid football and pretty much refuse to play all their young stars
