Correct. I was making a point about your sporadic use of labels to somehow justify quality however, I'm not sure what in the bollock yours is.

I was using the labels to show how the team selected should easily have had the quality within it to beat a League 2 side.

Had he played a bunch of kids then fair enough on the criticism but these were all experienced, high level, professionals that were selected.

And I was using your labels to show how utterly useless this is as a comparison.

I never said 'the team we put out against Newport were a load of world beaters who could mix it up with the best teams in the world.'

Making things up like that makes you look a bit of a tit.
I never said you did.

The individuals selected, possibly yes. The team selected, no.

Big difference.

International goalkeeper

Back 4 all of which have PL winners medals.

2 fans favourites in midfield.

An international winger

2 regular international forwards.

Seems like a team that should easily be enough to be Newport County so you can't blame it on poor selection.

People are moaning he plays players out of position but then call for a RB to be brought on out of position???

And do you honestly think Newport away is as tough a match as Wolves away??

If you come to the conclusion that Puel didn't want to win the game then you really are in cloud cuckoo land! Do you honestly believe he just told the players to go out and throw the game as such??

The point with the Wolves game is that Klopp had his top striker on the bench just in case and guess what? He used him, even though Liverpool lost Klopp covered all bases Puel did not.

WRT to Puel's mindset it is a defeatist one or he is completely arrogant to put Matty James in the starting 11 was a piss take to Newport and the player, coupled with having Andy King in the squad was an insult to the player and to the competition, to expect a player to come back from long term injury having played one U21 game is lamentable at best.
So actually I can blame it on poor selection because that is what it was.

Liverpool are actually playing for something meaningful and tangible.

They still weren't arrogant enough to not take their best player on the bench.

We are playing for a couple extra million squidders in the bank and we didn't even take one striker.

Arrogant, devaluing, stupid

Maybe we should sell them all and sign the Newport 11 instead?

And the 2 favourites I was referring to were Albrighton and Hamza - both according to most on here are our 2 best midfielders so surely that alone should have been enough to do a job against a League 2 side.

I am sure that your message was, at least part, tongue in cheek but, the attitude does seem to be in tune with the team that we picked.

Of course, a match against a lower team allows some fringe players a chance to shine. Playing Matty James, who hasn't played a single minute of first team football for ten months and then replacing him with King was disrespectful. Both players, when match fit, would have been more than a match for Newport but, in their condition, it was almost like playing with ten players, by choice. If the other players have their issues (e.g. our strike force being so low on confidence) then it was tantamount to surrender.

So when is a player returning from injury allowed to try and get match fit then?

Depends how long he's been out. Someone who's been out a long time needs to build up match fitness playing for the under 23s and appearances from the bench.

You mean exactly like Matty James has been doing, apart from the sun appearances.

It wouldnt have been better had he been on the bench and used for the Chelsea/Man City/Cardiff/Everton games as that would have gone down like a lead balloon with the majority of fans.

I agree that a long term absentee needs to be eased back into things but surely a match against a lower calibre of opposition in a game played at a slower pace is that exact ideal opportunity?

The defeat was not caused by Matty James starting the match.

I don’t think anyone is blaming Marty James.

The main point seems to be that by starting the game with Matty James along with Okazaki and Nacho considerably reduced our chances of winning this game. 3 ineffective/out of form/not fit players can’t be carried, 1 yes.

What we knew with reasonable certainty was that Newport would be up and at us from the off - and they were.

We had no strikers and a limp midfield so as soon as they scored we were up against it.

No Perreira in the 11 and no Vardy on the bench was suicide and some said as much in the match thread. Why go there and put yourself under pressure?

Get at them immediately and play most of your best 11, get a couple of goals up, having taken the wind out of their sails introduce James, Okazaki and Nacho.

NOT the other way round.

Matty James has barely played any U23 games - literally a couple all season.

It was clear from the first minute that he was unfit and shouldn’t have been on the field.

Well he had been injured for most of the season so it would have been quite hard for him to play in most of the U23 games.

Well yes, exactly.

Well yes, exactly.

He's featured in a few games since he has been back in full training.

How was in meant to feature in more before when he was injured?

He was hardly rushed back just for this game and our fitness team would have approved his condition before, its hardly like he jumped out of a wheelchair and on to the pitch.

Would we have been better to use him as a sub in our recent PL games then? I'm sure you'd all be very happy if he was named on the bench for Southampton this weekend.

Two. One in November, one in December.

How was in meant to feature in more before when he was injured?

He wasn't. He's supposed to play in more before he played for the first team.

Not being injured isn't the same as being match fit.

Would we have been better to use him as a sub in our recent PL games then?

No. He needs more game time in the under 23s.

One of the problems clubs have these days is there's no reserve league.
If we had a proper reserve team it would enable players to keep match fit, and would be a way for the kids to get experience playing against older players.

Exactly, the days of the Football Combination did that perfectly.
