Good luck to the lad. High odds against anyone from the lower French leagues fitting instantly into a top half premier league club, let alone in a team whose senior members struggle for form and consistency.
Apart from Mendy, for our foreign signings, going out on loan looks to be part of a one way ticket out of here. Would be good if Diabate bucks the trend, but I doubt it.

Someone at the club must have rated him a fair bit though. Reported €2m fee and a 4.5 year contract for a bloke in the second division in France is quite a commitment.

Pocket change for any Premier League club. £13m only gets you a second choice goalie. His wages won’t be anything like those of other fringe players. The club takes more expensive gambles than that all the time.

I get that. Let's face it, Slimani and Silva are good examples of expensive gambles. However, it still looks like an investment gone wrong, whether it was less expensive or not. That is someone's call and they got it wrong.

Doubt anyone’s being hauled over the coals for it. For a normal business the equivalent is being sent to the shop with petty cash and coming back with the wrong milk.

Oh for sure, I’m just pointing out why it’s not necessarily an indicator that anyone had an especially high opinion of him. Working in football recruitment you can afford to piss away a couple of million on a dud because a) it’s part and parcel of the game and clubs expect it and allow for it, and b) if you get the sack you’ll just get the same job elsewhere anyway. You usually get a Diabate, but every so often you find a Mahrez and you look like a genius.Doesn’t mean we can’t criticise them for it though
