Did Matty James used to be number 8, which is now vacant, or have I imagined that?

Suggests to me that it's either bye-bye Matty or we have an incoming that wants the 8 shirt.

The ManCity bloke that we're going to have to learn how to spell?

I can't see Matty being on his way after being named as captain in Hong Kong today.

Yeah I've seen the post on the clubs website now but in the past players have worn a different number in preseason and it hadn't meant anything

It rarely means anything anyway. If anything clubs are being daft losing out on replica shirts with number printing by giving first team starts single digit squad numbers. Probably the last pip to squeeze.

They should replace the numbers with individual sponsors - fitting in with the design of course.

Won't be long until you just have to identify players by their individually sponsored sandwich boards. Would also give great advantage to hd channels vs dodgy internet streams.

Can somebody please remind me of the rules about how many you can have registered to play in the Premier League.

It can. (Although that is for last year. Probably the same rules still apply)

https://www.premierleague.com/news/84136

After the closing of the summer transfer window each Premier League club had a deadline of 4pm on 1 September to submit a squad list containing no more than 17 players who do not fulfil the "Home Grown Player" (HGP) criteria.

The remainder of the squad, up to a total of 25 players, must be Home Grown. An HGP means a player who, irrespective of his nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to the Football Association or the Football Association of Wales for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons or 36 months prior to his 21st birthday (or the end of the season during which he turns 21).

Changes to the squad list of 25 may be made during the period of a transfer window. Under-21 players are eligible over and above the limit of 25 players per squad. For the 2016/17 campaign Under-21 players will have been born on or after 1 January 1995.

Each club squad list is below as well as an additional list of each club’s registered Under-21 players who are eligible over and above the squad limit of 25 players.
