Would be a good signing, I actually have seen him play I don't care what people say and he looks good. Suppose we won't here anything about this again though.

On the Bench ... With Sunderland's Rising Star Martyn Waghorn
Posted Jul 26, 2009 3:50PM By Jason Mellor (RSS feed)

Martyn Waghorn has been likened to Wayne Rooney by more than one respected football observer.

No less a figure than Roy Keane has predicted that the Sunderland teenager will enjoy a "long and successful career".

So, no pressure there, then, Martyn.

Even at the age of 19, Waghorn's has enjoyed a varied career, taking his first footballing steps at the Manchester United school of excellence before, at the grand old age of eight, returning to his native North-East to join the Black Cats.

Since then, Waghorn has rarely looked back.

In common with many of his similarly talented contemporaries, a loan move, followed, in this instance to Charlton Athletic. However, after an impressive start, injury deprived the player of valuable experience and the London club of a growing talent who could have helped keep them in the Championship last term.

Back, fully fit and ready to impress this season, the offers are coming in for a player with deceptive pace and touch for one so robustly built and with finishing skills which can only continue to improve.

Colin Todd, manager of Sunderland's League Two neighbours Darlington, says: "I'd love to take Martyn on loan, but I've been told there are a lot of Championship clubs interested in him."

Steve Bruce will have a good look at what Waghorn has to offer before deciding between another loan stint, or continuing his footballing education by keeping him at the Stadium of Light to compete for the first team place that looks increasingly within his grasp.

The Sunderland manger, who gave Waghorn chance to impress in the pre-seasonAmsterdam Tournament, said: "Since I came into the job, my phone's been red hot with managers asking about my young players, and that's testament to the great job being done at our academy.

"The young lads have really impressed me and they'll get their chance to show me what they can do in pre-season." Waghorn, you suspect, won't need many opportunities to make a favourable impression.

Played against us when the Academy won the Premiership. :icon_wink

I think given the disappointments of missing out on the likes of Cox and Lita, I am glad to see we have gone for a different option than picking up a mediocre journeyman striker. Whilst it is a risk, it is the kind of signing that could prove to be an inspired piece of business. I have seen him in action for Charlton last season, albeit on TV and he looked like a busy and bustling type of player and he is different to what we have.

Obviously can't comment on his ability but judging from what Iv'e read he seems like the type to go for, could turn out to be an inspired piece of business.

If we could get him and Kermit in we would have a varied front line with good options, A busy striker in this Wagamamas lad and a target man in the Frog, certainly looks a bit better than this time yesterday.

Where would he fit in?

He is the same height as Fryatt but 2 stone heavier so he won't get pushed off the ball so easily.

He is nearly 6 inches shorter than Howard so unless he has springs instead of achilles tendons he will not be a target man for goal kicks etc. There again Hume was a great jumper but only 5' 7".
