Technology for refs

I really can't see why all the clamouring for goal line technology.
Think the time, energy and money would be better off looking at other ways to assist referee's.

To assist the referee's what?

One way would be to take the timekeeping away from the ref, let him just rule over the game.

Some would say that the ref is in the ideal position to judge how much time is being wasted and to know how much time to add on at the end of each half. Football is not like games such as American Football, ice hockey and Basketball where the clock is stopped at the end of each play.

Not that jumpy though to the extent a ball would move almost 2 foot per frame - using the 30mph example again. Is it not also down to the refresh rate of the screen too though?

I don't understand it all tbh but aren't films captured at 24fps and there's no way you ever see a car, for example, jumping 2 foot each frame and that's if it was moving at a measley 30mph.

Could be though.

There nothing preventing a giant clock being stopped by a ref-operated radio link controller.

Or having the match split into 1/3s with time-outs and sin bins.

And compulsory streaking - there's not enough streaking at matches any longer. Used to be a time when you'd always see it - seems to have vanished along with UFO sightings, dogs on the pitch, penny chews and white dog shit.

I'm blaming Matt Mills for all of it.

Going back to the football example though, I did play about with the Bolton QPR non goal last night - not the best footage as it had been editted already but good enough to have a play with. As expected, 25 frames each second but still easily possible to determine the position of the ball. Upon impact a ball does not rebound immeadiately - there is a split second where the ball will compress under the force of it coming into contact with a solid surface which provides ample opportunity in this instance to determine ball position.

Yes high speed cameras would be helpfull, but I still stand by my opinion that they are not essential and a normal camera would at least provide a better insight as to what we get now from just the 4 human officials.

Normal cameras have proved time and again that they often do not sufficiently clarify matters. If you watch MotD you will repeatedly see incidents where the pundits admit that things are still not clear.

But do you really think that I need that pointing out? How do you think I came up with that figure in the first place? It was either a good guess or it was derived from Jeff's figures and rounded up for simplification. I felt your condescending attitude was unnecessary then though if I took it the wrong way - my bad but still seems a bit of a pointless post.

I watch MOTD every week and as I said before, I can't recall any goalmouth indcident whereby the position of the ball was undeterminable due to shutter speed. I even said I'm open to be proven wrong as it is a topic that interests me and i'm willing to learn but apart from Mawsley's example, the only other one stated was getting on for 60yrs ago though I am not suggesting this is the only occasion but it is the only one that has been put forward as a reasonable agrument.
