Hammond confirms NO bids for Reading FC star Kebe

Reading director of football Nick Hammond has confirmed to the Reading Post that the club have had NO enquiries for Jimmy Kebe.

Rumours have been rife over the past 24 hours that the 27-year-old winger was set to quit Madejski Stadium for Leicester City in a £4million deal.

However, Royals fans can now breathe a sigh of relief after Hammond confirmed that Kebe, who is out of contract in 12-months time, is still a Royals player amongst a wave of speculation.

He said: “We have had no contact from anyone about Jimmy. We had a good meeting with his people on Sunday and there is an offer of a new contract on the table.

“Myself and Brian [McDermott] have no interest in letting anyone go.”

Midfielder Brian Howard and Marcus Williams have both asked to leave Reading, but no clubs have come in for them.

And Hammond admitted: “I would have thought that if anyone was going to come in for them then they would have done so before 3.30pm on deadline day.”
 
Leicester City left-back Paul Konchesky tells BBC Sport's Paul Fletcher what players who are not on the move get up to on deadline day: "With training finished for the day, I'll be putting my feet up and watching the final few hours of the transfer deadline to see whether we sign anybody. At Leicester you never quite know."

He's not giving anything away, is he?

By 'see whether we sign anybody' I assume he means 'hope and pray that we don't sign a couple of decent full backs'.

Well you don't understand a lot about him or our new owners then.

I'm torn on this issue. On the one hand, I want continuity and an end to the constant change. On the other, MON is available and I think he'd now take the job if it were offered. The thought of O'Neill, Robertson and Walford working with this squad plus backing from the owners is extremely attractive. I cannot accept that Sven, Faz and Stowell are in any way as good as that alternative based on everything I've seen of them all.

If the owners are serious about quick success and results continue to bumble along by the next international break, it's a real option that I'd probably take if I were able to make the decision.

What don't I understand? As far as I can see he has fallen out with virtually every owner he has worked under, especially ones who interfere and have their own agenda and doesn't get own way and complete control. I can't imagine he'd get on with owners who are pushing for big named signings and taking a lot of the limelight.

MON wants total control over the playing side of any football club he manages. He wants to be able to build a team without selling players who are key to the teams development whilst getting appropriate support in the transfer market.

However, he is no dinosaur. He has adapted his mentality to modern times and was happy to go on promotional pre-season tours etc with both Celtic and Villa. We shouldn't make the mistake of thinking that the MON of 11 years ago is the same as he is now. He has changed and adapted with the times.

I would think the combination of him and our owners is ideal for both parties. The only thing with MON is that he's not as well known world wide as Sven. Is MON more likely to get us promotion and success in the Prem than Sven though? I think the evidence to date says yes.

Yes and do you think he will have total control over his signings and funds here? Do you not think our owners will be asking for big named signings as has been well documented they have done with SGE? He resigned at Aston Villa, which wasn't 11 years ago, (and at a time which completely left Villa in the lurch) because he wasn't in 100% control of the transfers and 100% in control of who he could buy.

MON left Villa because they'd sold Barry and were about to sell Milner. As we've seen since, they've subsequently sold other assets like Young and Downing. His view was that he'd been employed to build a team to challenge for the top four but wasn't going to be able to do this with a selling mentality.

And yes I do think he'd be given total control over signings here. Not funds as that would be ridiculous and he wouldn't expect it. And I don't think he'd be averse to signing a 'big name' if that suited him. That is exactly the policy that Sven has intimated to in interviews.

Villa - a club with a selling mentality while MON was there? Give me a break! MON spent massive amounts of money at Villa, he spent more on transfer fees than ManUtd and Arsenal in his time there. Only Chelsea, ManCity and Spurs spent more on players than him in his stint at Villa in fact and ManCity only did because of their big spending during his last season there. He was given the funds to challenge for a top 4 spot and he failed in that target. There was one stage when he was 3rd, 10 points ahead of Arsenal in 5th in about February/March time and then he completely blew it winning something like 1 of his final 13 games.

You can't just keep going on spending as Villa were without the Champions League money, they had to sell to balance the books because of the vast amounts of money they had spent and Villa have had to kerb their spending because of it since.

No one has ever doubted he is a good manager on the pitch and gets results (though people claiming he is one of the best managers in the world and that he is good enough for the ManUtd job are rather hilarious), but his dealings with his employers off it certainly have left a lot to be desired over the years. We'd have to wait and see what kind of freedom he was given here if he ever came back, but I don't doubt for one second he'd get into loggerheads with the board and be off at the first sign of any board interference.

Great post PF..I totally agree with what you say...10 years ago Mon was great with leicester,could he repeat it all over again..God Knows..what we do have with SVEN is a man with lots of contacts which in todays game is very important.Now the big question...Do we start the manager merry-go-round yet again?..or show some support for our present manager?
