Leicester City winger Tom Lawrence has joined Championship side Ipswich Town on a season-long loan deal.

The 22-year-old Wales international joined the Foxes from Manchester United in the summer of 2014 and made his debut in a 1-0 FA Cup victory over Newcastle United the following January.

Lawrence spent last season on loan with Championship sides Blackburn Rovers and Cardiff City – clocking up a total of 35 appearances in the division and scoring two goals.

Having previously enjoyed successful loan spells in the Championship with Rotherham United and Yeovil Town, Lawrence will link up with an Ipswich side currently enjoying a three-match unbeaten run.

Mick McCarthy’s side sit 11th in the table after five games - just one point adrift of the top six and three off the automatic promotion places.

Next up for the Tractor Boys is a trip to fellow promotion hopefuls Reading next Friday night, where Lawrence could come up against former City defender Liam Moore.

For his sake I'd like him to get a permanent deal somewhere. He's never going to play for us.

Terrible idea. He's young and has great potential. We don't need the money from selling him. Let him get experience and he could be of value to us next year.

How much experience does he need? He's 2 years older than Gray, has played around the same number of league games as Gray and has 4 full international caps. If he was going to make it at Leicester I think he would have done so by now.

Agreed.

And if he really had "great" potential he would be a first-team regular by now. Not knocking him, just being realistic.

We would have sold him if he didn't have any future here at all.

I can't imagine we would want much.

You have to have an offer before you can sell someone.

If the speculation is correct there has been a lot of interest in him, so I'm sure someone would have been interested in a permanent deal.

I can see why the club would want to keep him, and why they wanted to keep Moore and Dodoo.
It costs so much to buy a player good enough for the first team it's not much of a gamble to keep young players for a bit longer than we would in the past in the hope they'll become good enough. The occasional one that makes it will more than make up for the ones that don't.

Do you know what "potential" is?

Chelsea have taken this to the limit looking at the list of players they have out on loan on another thread.
