Go back to the pre match thread in which many of us expressed concern over Chilwell as a LB. If you still think he should be starting games in that posotion, I give you that game as Exhibit A. He was appalling from the first minute as was Dragovic.

We had a huge gaping hole in midfield through which Watford attacked us again and again and we just couldn't create anything at all. I don't blame King entitely for this, although he was largely anonymous, but that just isn't his strength. Iborra should have started if he wasn't injured and we could have rested him against Liverpool, a game we wouldn't have complained too much about losing.

Okazaki was well off his game today as well. He wasn't as much of a nuisance as he normally appears to be and that, combined with Vardy's poor effort on goal in the first half, meant that we were always going to struggle when they went a goal up.
Pop, to add to this and in partial agreement with others - Vardy is getting fewer and fewer chances per game and therefore his miss today goes down as a bad one.

As he sees less and less ball facing goal he will naturally snatch at chances and his hit rate will reduce. I am not advocating the long ball but at the moment the blend isn’t quite right.

Chilwell is much better playing ahead of Fuchs, at the moment (and only experience will tell) he doesn’t read the game well enough to fill the role of a traditional LB.

****, for all his faults we really missed Simpson today. He doesn’t get enough credit.

Spot on. Vardy isn't getting the chances a striker of his particular strengths needs.

It's incredible how many people are willing to keep banging on about Simpson and how he isn't good enough. He's really is you know. He has weaknesses as all players do but on the whole he is a solid, dependable, committed player who we will miss very much over the next few games.

I haven’t seen anyone saying Simpson isn’t good enough. I’ve seen people say he doesn’t fit what Puel wants to do with his system. I expect Puel to attempt tor replace Simpson.

I actually disagree with Puel on this point, and think the full backs bombing on is contributing to our defensive issues. Paired with the wingers playing very narrow and it seems to be leaving us too stretched defensively.

Silly me disagreeing with a former footballer though.

And so incredibly exhilarating at others.

Being a City fan is better than supporting any other club, I’m convinced of it. There hasn’t been a boring season for decades (even when we were really shit).

Now that's really not true. There have been several mind-numbingly dull seasons in recent memory.

Exhibit A - 2004/2005. It started with a 0-0 and finished with a 0-0. We ended the season in a meaningless 15th. Crap players, crap football, crap manager. Tedious beyond belief. We bombed out of the league cup in the first round to Preston. We did have a quarter final in the FA Cup but this was far less interesting than it sounds. Dull opposition (Blackpool, Reading and Charlton), poor matches and done 1-0 at Blackburn.

It was so boring you've probably ejected it from memory. There are other seasons in contention too . . .

I would say if our last boring season was 12 years ago we're rather more interesting than West Bromwich Albion, stoke or even to a lesser extent Arsenal or Spurs.

I'm with miles away on this one. It's something I've said to friends and family many times - we just don't do "middle of the road", at least recently. We either fight relegation or win something.

I agree.

In the title winning season we were so poor defensively up until the Norwich game when Claudio replaced De Laet and Schlupp (both kept bombing forward) with Simpson and Fuchs (who didn’t).

We definitely could have done better, we definitely need a RB replacement for IF simpson is injured, we also need a MID replacement for is Ndidi or Vicente can't play (that's if Adrien Silva is shite)

I genuinely don't think we can rely on Vardy he is a decent player, but at present I can't name any strikers in our squad that will be able to play in replace of Vardy or to partner with him.

Which makes you wonder why we insist on playing full backs that drive forward now and can't keep a clean sheet.

Hmmmm

Very disappointing - on the radio said that City hadn't won a Boxing Day match since 1998 (against Sheffield Wednesday) If that's right ( I can't remember) that's 19 years of boxing day dross!

There have been plenty of folk criticising Simpson not Puel's usage of him.

Like I say, you can agree or disagree with whoever you like but you do realise that an isolated incident in which the technical facts are there to see for everyone is slightly different to a whole approach to management don't you? Then again, perhaps I'm being hopelessly optimistic.

Puel has a lot of work to do to rebuild a defence which is both aging and not really of the times. Simpson is a defensive right back with little comparative ability going forward. Chilwell is excellent going forward but I still think suspiciously defensively. I do not think he and Maguire are currently a fantastic combination.

However what Puel has done so far is - I think - 18 points in 10 games.
That's a respectable haul - even if the league does seems to be a lower quality on average this year.

For my money, he is doing well. It will be interesting to see what he does with a transfer window.

Perhaps in the Premier League.

I think our last win on Boxing Day was against Reading at home in the promotion season. There was a problem with the flood lights if I recall.

Our defending is shite in open play as well.

In every game teams are playing balls through the middle of us with no challenge, luckily kasper managed to push the player wide yesterday but overall we are soft at the back and it needs changing.

Doubled our points per game.
That's not too shabby in my books, considering the hand he was dealt with.

As soon as Shakey needed a new tactic he was done. I think Puel inherited a good squad low on confidence. And a team that had played most of their big games.

It's a good haul but the big test is still yet to come!

Nor this season. It will take time
