RACING at Worcester on Wednesday was delayed by over an hour after the track ran out of water for the horses after one race.
A stewards' inquiry is being held with expert advice being taken as to whether the rest of the meeting should be abandoned.
In an ironic twist for the course which has suffered from flooding over the last two summers, racing has been halted while the track refilled its water bowsers.
The heat affected the runners in the first race - the only one to have been run so far on Wednesday - after which a horse collapsed due to heat exhaustion.
Clerk of the course Fergus Cameron is trying to access a fire hydrant in the centre of the course to reach more urgently needed water.
Sarah Bosley, wife of trainer Martin Bosley who has a runner in the 3.40, said: "The horses have been walking around the paddock for so long that the best thing to do is abandon the race and move on to the next race."
