I think so.
The idea of versatile players instills me with a little fear (Jack of all trades...) but some of the players capable of "doing a job" in other positions have worked out OK (such as Maybury at LB - far from ideal, but more than adequate if we are pushed). If we have a bit of faith in CL's vision, and make a massive assumption they'll all work out, we are well covered in most positions.
So let's try a little exercise.
Take any five players from the current squad (include possible signings or sales as you wish) and say these five are injured or suspended. Then make up the best team you can from those remaining.
I'll start it off by taking out, from those who are still here, last season's five most important players (IMHO):
Maybury, Hughes, McCarthy, Dublin, Connolly - all out with dodgy metatarsals :icon_lol:
I'm going to assume the signings of Gerrbrand and Lovell. Fingers crossed. But if not them, I think we'll make two more similar signings. Here's my team in those circumstances:
Douglas
Stearman, Kisnorbo, Johannson, Gerrbrand
Sylla, Williams, Gudjonsson, Tiatto
De Vries, Lovell
Or maybe...
Douglas
Stearman, Gerrbrand, Johannson, Willcox
Sylla, Williams, Kisnorbo, Tiatto
De Vries, Lovell
* No Lee Morris - he is also assumed to be injured. And we may need to replace Tiatto, who will probably be suspended
Now, I would be a bit worried if either of these teams were our first choice, but if five of our most important players are out at the same time, I think we'd rightly call it an injury crisis, and expect to be pushed to the limit.
If we had Connolly, De Vries, Dublin, Lovell and O'Grady all out, we'd be in trouble (and incredibly unlucky!) but even then, Sylla has played up front and you could play Hughes or Williams just behind. Or get Morris an electric wheelchair...
And we've had worse forward lines than that - David Oldfield and Phil Gee, anyone?!
