Leicester City are delighted to announce that midfielder Andy King has committed his long-term future to the Football Club by signing a new contract until 2020.
The new deal comes on the back of an incredible 12 months for the 27-year-old graduate of Leicester City’s Academy, who lifted the Premier League trophy in May before helping lead Wales to the semi-finals of Euro 2016 in France.
A key figure for the Club on and off the pitch, King is the only player in the Premier League era to earn league winners’ medals in each of England’s top three tiers with one team – a feat he completed in the space of just eight seasons.
With an incredible 331 appearances to his name in a Leicester City shirt since his debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2007, King also holds the distinguished honour of being the Club’s top scoring midfielder of all time with 59 goals, a record he took from legendary midfielder Davie Gibson in 2013/14.
He is also the player to have scored the most goals at King Power Stadium since it opened in 2002. As well as his impressive trophy haul with the first team, King’s rise through the ranks of Leicester City’s Academy saw him help the Under-18s side lift the FA Academy Premier League crown in 2007.
King has also played for the Club in its lowest-ever league position (eighth in the third tier) and its highest-ever league position (first in the top flight) – an indication of the incredible journey both he and Leicester City have taken.
An experienced Wales international with 36 caps, King’s reputation as a creative force in midfield for Club and country continues to grow, known.
Having joined the Academy in 2004 and winning the FA Premier Academy League crown in 2007, King signed a two-year deal with the Club and went on to make his full debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers in October. That was one of 12 starts for King in his debut season – during which his goal against Southampton won the Club’s Goal of the Season award.
During the 2008/09 campaign under Nigel Pearson, King’s influence grew as he helped the team to the League 1 title before taking his goal scoring exploits to new heights in the 2010/11 Championship season, when he netted a stunning 16 times from midfield.
The midfielder again showed his worth as part of the 2013/14 Championship-winning team, when his performances and goals helped see the team storm to the title with a record 102 points – something that eventually led to King’s long-awaited Premier League debut on the opening day of the 2014/15 season against Everton.
His late winner against West Ham United in April 2015 will go down as one of the most important in the Club’s history, as it kick-started a stunning run of form that lifted the Foxes from the bottom of the table to safety in what many believe is the greatest Premier League escape of all time.
Building on that success, King again played his part in the 2015/16 Premier League-winning season. His goal against West Bromwich Albion in a 2-2 draw at King Power Stadium displayed some masterful finishing.
Fittingly, King scored one and set up another in a 3-1 win over Everton in City’s final home league game of the campaign on the day that the Premier League trophy was lifted.
