After signing another youngster in Peter Gilbert, its nice to see the squad looking a lot younger in general. With players like O'grady, Wes (although out for a bit :icon_cry: ) Sheehan and Stearman all coming through its dramatically lowered the average squad age to about 25. I wonder how that compares to the start of last seasons squad with MA in charge!

One of Micky's last league team selections (away versus QPR):

Pressman 38
Dabizas 32
Keown 38
Dublin 36
Makin 32
Scowcroft 29
Nalis 34
Gemmill 34
Connolly 27
Wilcox 33
Blake 33

Average age = 33.27

A younger squad must bode well for the future. Im really quite excited about the new season.

That is a frightening team in the worst sense of the word.

Still some way to go before they get as young as that line-up in the late 70s though. Only Mark Wallington and Martin Henderson were over 21 and the average age was just under 20

Im glad to see that only 3 (Dublin, Connolly and Wilcox) remain from that 'walking stick XI' Micky Adams team!!

Thats unbelievable. I knew the squad was old, but when you look at that team it really brings it home.

Has anyone got any doubts that the team we've got this season is not better than this?!!!

lets not get over excited just because our squad is a little younger-last season we thought the oldies were going to walk all over the league at this point.

Other players from the MA era:

Les Ferdinand 38
Ian Walker 33
Keith Gillespie 30
Danny Tiatto 31
Steve Howey 32

I think it's fair to say that our new manager has a different style of recruitment.

To be honest - this is just the time to get over excited! Its usually down hill once the season starts!

Its not just youth though, its the players themselves - Makin or Maybury? McCatchy or Dabazis? Hughes or Gemmil? Wilcox or errr..:)

I think under MA we had too many old heads; unfortunately old heads are attached to old bodies. I worry a little about whether we have retained enough old heads to have an influence on the new heads.

Perhaps we shoudln't be worrying about whether this squad is stronger than the one we started off with last season. Perhaps our future relies more on the skills of the bloke that leads them.

:icon_lol: yes boc you do usually find old heads attached to old bodies :icon_lol:

Go on - take the p*ss. I can cope!

Perhaps a clumsy way of saying it, but I am sure you knew what I meant.

I think we will be better off with a good mix of older players and youth. We have to get the mix right and IMO the point of keeping Dublin is to help bring the young uns on a bit.

Our team is a lot more exciting this season and we were only excited last season because we had a lot of names in the squad that had been good in the past and we believed that they were gonna do the same for us. That rarely happens and it didnt for us.

Lets hope CL gets the mix right this season and that we can go up to the best league in europe and stay there while CL builds for a long and hopefully succesful era.

I think the age thing had a lot to do with the leaking of late goals. If we stop that this season then we are already onto a winner.

Fair point, but we will probaly leak goals at the start this time through lack of experience:)
