Boss Announces Backroom Staff

Good morning,

I am pleased to announce three further members of staff. Adrian Whitbread, Dave Hockaday, Damien Doyle have joined the team off the field.

Adrian arrives here as my assistant. He has been with me since my time at Barnet when he worked for nothing after his career as a player was finished by injury. He was unqualified with regards to coaching badges and this summer he has been invited to the UEFA pro licence course at Warwick University.

Adrian has a fantastic work ethic. He is a great organiser and is an up and coming young coach who has shown great dedication to learn, improve and develop.

Dave Hockaday joins as first team coach. He is a very good practical coach and has excellent organisation skills. He joined me only a few months ago.

Dave gives me a different view. He is a good sounding board. He was first team coach at Watford and has got the experience of getting promotion to the Premiership. I will learn from him.

Damien Doyle is a sports scientist with more letters after his name that the blinking alphabet. He has worked with me since I started at Barnet and I promised him that as he was working for nothing, one day, if he kept learning and continuing his education work, I would take him with me.

Damien's work involves prehab and rehab work, speed training, individual power programme, core ball work and body conditioning work for the players.

I know about these areas of sports science, but I have to admit I don't know the details of them. That is why I have got people in who are more qualified than myself, which enables me to learn and develop.

All of the extra programmes in the different areas of fitness and sports science are optional for the players. I have never made the players do it, but it is interesting to see which players want to improve, develop and make them better. It is optional?!

Gone are the days, in my opinion, of just managing the team and hoping for the best. We are constantly looking at new ideas to help us gain any advantage we can.

I have met Dave Rennie (Head Physio), who I believe to be one of the best in the country. I also know that he is the top man for helping me with the occasional indigestion.

Take care,

Martin

I hope Adrian Whitbread is a better assistant manager than he was centre-half.... Didn't he play for Swindon in their Premier League year when they let in 487 goals???
