Leicester City defender Filip Benković will join Scottish Premiership champions Celtic on loan for the 2018/19 season.

The talented 21-year-old joined the Foxes on a five-year deal earlier this month from Dinamo Zagreb and will now continue his development with Celtic as they aim to win a 50th league title.

The Croatian youth international, who made his City debut as a substitute in a 4-0 win over Fleetwood Town on Tuesday night, is regarded as an exciting talent following a string of impressive performances in Croatia.

He arrived at Leicester City after a successful 2017/18 campaign at Dinamo Zagreb in which he made 30 appearances for the Croatian side in all competitions, scoring four goals in a season that saw them clinch the league title.

The 6ft 4ins defender came through the Dinamo Zagreb academy and made his debut in July 2015. He won the league with the team the following season and has featured in three European campaigns – two in the UEFA Champions League.

He joins a Celtic side who sit second in the table after just three games and who are aiming to win their eighth consecutive league title. Benković could make his debut in Sunday’s Old Firm Derby against Rangers at Celtic Park.

Good luck to him.

Very unusual move for us, but hopefully shows we really are planning long term.

Realistically this is probably the last season of Big Wes, maybe the only season for Jonny Evans, and maybe the last year we can keep hold of Maguire, so if Benky has a good season for Celtic he's got a good opportunity to come straight in next year.

I think this is a very good move. We have a lot of seasoned pros in the centre back position, so If Benkovic proves he can do a reasonable job at Celtic, he’s well positioned to replace someone.

Also, it will hopefully continue his taste for winning. Every squad needs serial winners to continue pushing through, and if we’re loaning to serial winning teams regardless of the competition, it can only be a good thing.
