Leicester City's game against Birmingham tomorrow was in doubt today after yesterday's gale-force winds wreaked havoc.
Part of the roof of the neighbouring Express by Holiday Inn landed on the Walkers Stadium concourse.
Club bosses admitted that the fixture was "looking a bit precarious" on health and safety grounds as the debris had to be removed and the hotel made safe before the game.
Experts from Leicester City Council were on site today, beginning a major clean-up operation.
Chris Moore, team manager of the city council's building control services, said he would know later today whether the match was off.
He said: "Yesterday was basically a day of disaster. I can't say whether the match will go ahead or not yet. Ask me later today and I will have a better idea.
"I'm just very thankful nobody was killed. There were people in the (car-park) kiosk and people walking by in the area when the roof came off."
A spokesman for Leicester City Football Club said: "The roof debris is being cleared up today and it's all in the hands of the city council."
When asked whether the match, which is due to be screened live on Sky TV, would go ahead, he replied: "We have to make sure the roof is safe. It's still looking a bit precarious but that will be up to the city council."
City council clean-up teams were facing the task of having to cut up and remove the roof which landed just yards from the stadium.
High-reach platforms were being drafted in to enable cutting teams to reach the torn roofline of the Holiday Inn to make damaged sections on the hotel safe.
Moore said this morning: "We'll be here most of the day clearing up the debris. We'll get cherry-pickers in later today to tackle the roof.
"The danger is that the loose stuff can be blown off. Tomorrow evening the winds are meant to pick up again. Because of the amount of damage around, the cherry-pickers are very much in demand."
Staff at the Walkers were forced to stay inside yesterday as emergency services secured the wreckage.
More than 200 hotel guests were moved to another Holiday Inn.
