HEAD TO HEAD
The two clubs have met just 20 times before, with 17 of those clashes coming in the league. Brighton just hold the upper hand with 9 victories to City’s 8, though all of City’s wins have come when points were at stake. Overall, City have won just 2 and lost 5 of the meetings on the South coast.
EARLY MEETINGS
The initial encounter was in the F A Cup in 1930-31, and saw Brighton register a giant-killing win at Filbert Street. The first league games did not take place until 1978-79, when the Foxes ran out 4-1 winners at Filbert Street, with Brighton gaining revenge by a 3-1 scoreline at the Goldstone Ground. In fact, it was not until 1991-92 that City finally managed a victory in Brighton.
CRUNCH FIXTURE IN BRIGHTON
The last time the clubs met in a genuine relegation battle on the South coast, in the 1980-81 season, Jock Wallace’s team crashed to a 2-1 defeat at the Goldstone Ground in a fixture that saw both goalscorer Kevin MacDonald and striker Alan Young red carded. At the end of the season, City went down whilst the Seagulls stayed up.
RECENT HISTORY
Earlier this season the clubs played out a goalless draw at the Walkers Stadium, on the day that Paul Henderson made his first league outing for the Foxes. Last season, a David Connolly penalty was enough to earn a 1-1 draw at the Withdean Stadium.
BIGGEST WINS
City’s biggest wins have both come at Filbert Street: by 4-1 in 1978-79 as mentioned above, and by 3-0 in 1990-91, inspired by Tommy Wright and Kevin Russell. The Seagulls also recorded a 3-0 win in 1990-91, at the Goldstone Ground.
SEQUENCES
Since the promotion clincher at the Walkers Stadium on Easter Saturday 2003, City have not won any of the subsequent three clashes against the Seagulls.
DEBUTS
Oddly, no player has made his debut for either club in a Leicester-Brighton clash.
BAD BOYS
In contrast, there have been several red cards in previous meetings. Alan Young, Kevin MacDonald and Stephen Hughes have all suffered that fate for the Foxes, whilst Gary Chivers and Jimmy Case have enjoyed early Brighton baths.
FOOT IN BOTH CAMPS
Connections down the years include Trevor Benjamin, Paul Brooker, Steve Claridge, Graham Cross, Paul Dickov, Martin Keown, Junior Lewis, Larry May, Simon Morgan, Lammie Robertson, Simon Royce and Kevin Russell. In the last 15 years, the clubs have also shared managers in Micky Adams, Peter Taylor and Mark McGhee, of course.
