Everybody talks about the infamous Sheffield United match, when early in MON's managerial career with us, following a dismal home defeat the crowd vented their anger and fustration, whilst in hindsight it probably wasnt the right course of action, it seemed to be the catalyst of what was to be a golden era for our club.

Now I am not saying we are ever going to repeat those glory years, but I do believe that the defeat against Burnley at home could well be the spark that ignites the CL revolution. I dont expect us to win promotion this season, but what I have witnessed since that sorry performance is a renewed determination by the players and management to avoid a repeat of that type of display.

There was in the aftermath of that defeat the first real signs of pressure on CL, the final whistle was greeted with cries of "what a load of rubbish", the forums had many concerned fans questioning the direction the club was heading, some of the comments were over the top and without consideration, but on the whole most were constructive, it was the manner of the performance that really hurt many City fans, proving that most fans will accept defeat as long as they can see a side giving nothing less than 100%.

The way the players have bounced back from this defeat, has given me a lot of encouragement as to the character of not only the squad itself but also that of the management team. It also shows just how much this squad wants to play for this manager, which is always a good sign.

CL too has demonstrated his managerial ability too, his tactical astuteness has come to the fore, the way he has used his squad over the past 3 games, he seems as well to be coming to terms with English football, he does appear to learn from his mistakes, and he is not afraid to try different formations and tactics if he believes that will win the game, as demonstrated at Cardiff. More importantly for me though is how he has shown his squad he is not afraid to be ruthless, both Alan Maybury and Gareth Williams have been disciplined recently, and both have found it difficult in regaining their positions in the team, Maybury only returned on wednesday night, whilst Williams played on wednesday but was not in the 16 again yesterday.

I am not going to get carried away and to start to think we are now going to win promotion this season, but what I am now seeing is the improvement that CL had promised, and the real belief that next season we will, with some more decent additions, be a real force to be reckoned with.

Whilst I think we are slowly going in the right direction I believe people should prepare themselves for 1 or 2 more Burnley like performances this season. We just have to accept it,not dwell on it too much.I would be worried when A Burnley like display his immediately followed by another Burnley like display and then another.

Good Post.

CL never really seems to be the insane ruthless manager who once punched a team mate during a game though does he?

Time will tell - for now, were improving and thats really all we can ask for.

True and that's all us Realists are asking for..

Or 2 wins away from the playoffs ;)

And thats it in a nutshell. Don't lose the plot if we have a couple of defeats, and don't think we have cracked it if we have a couple of wins. Success this season IMO would be a top 10 finish, which would give good reason for optimism next season.

I think what we have to do, is take each game as it comes, I think we are all guilty of getting carried away with results, we lose a couple and we are going to get relegated, win a couple it's play offs here we come, I think it is this type of pressure that usually results in us falling back down to earth with an almighty bump.

We have a young side, and we are all aware that the manager is building with a long term plan, we are currently on a nice little run, but I refuse to get carried away with thoughts of the play offs, because at the moment all I am interested in is seeing an improvement in our results, performances and mental approach, at the moment I am very pleased in what I am seeing, the younger players are all improving, we are playing better football, and IMO the players are showing an improvement in performances both individually and as a team. And that is all we can ask for.

I agree with Highland, there will be bad results, and performances, but the true indicator of our improvement will be how often these types of performance occur and how the players react and bounce back. For many of these younger players it is there first full season of playing regular championship football and is a massive learning curve, and IMO one that most are benefiting from.

Imo the Cov result showed there is some character in the team. I think that was a big result for everyone connected with the club.

well said squire ;)

Its nice to feel optimistic for a change, away to bolton is a similar tie to the charlton one last year, this season could return some excitement yet.

Although i personally wont be carried away just yet, i dont think we are ready for promotion, by the end of next season we may be.

I've enjoyed this thread - good solid posts from PFKAKTF, and good responses, this is what the forum is all about.

I for one cannot see how the Burnley match can be compared to the Sheff Utd match - no way - there was no singing of "F*** Off Craig Levein" or anything like it. I'd say it is clutching at straws to say that the what a load of rubbish chanting will form the catalyst to a sparkling run of form and play off achievement plus promotion. I hope I'm wrong but I think the very best we can achieve this season is top 8. The season after that I would hope for play-offs but I wouldn't expect too much for a few years yet. Patience my fellow foxes, patience.

Hooray a thread that contains some good positive vibes - liking it girls and boys!
The table is still that tight that a couple of wins and it all looks rosey a couple of loses and the doom and gloom specialists come flooding back. I still think there is more positive stuff to come from this season, we are showing signs of improvement and the more the nucleus of the team play together the better we look, we are still in both cup competitions with a realistic chance of causing a few upsets. I for one am not settling for mid-table just yet!
COME ON YOU BLUE BOYS!

Top quality thread :icon_wink

It amazing what a good run can do for the confidence and belief of some fans!! I totally agree that top 10 this season would be a good achievement, but at the same time if we finish mid table Im not gonna start questioning CL. Maybe we should make this thread a sticky and remind those optimists if we lose 3 on the bounce and go out the carling cup! ;) :icon_razz

Well if it's as good as we all think it is then surely it'll become sticky.

I wondered how long it would take before a good thread would be side tracked by innuendo! :icon_roll :icon_cool

:icon_lol: I don't apologise.

"I hope I'm wrong but I think the very best we can achieve this season is top 8." (sorry don't know how to do that box quote thing)

Heh - my preseason prediction was 8th and I'd be happy enough for us to wind up there. However, 'twould be wrong to completely write off the playoffs (or a relegation fight for that matter) 'cos the section is so tight. Watford will certainly feel they're gunning for the playoffs and they looked (as ever) an extremely mild side. I think it's what our manager and players will feel they should be shooting for, but I for one would be pretty surprised.

As for the one win you're up, one loss you're down business, I gave that up along with antidepressants and the 20th century :045: Oh yes!
