Mattock Makes The Grade

Leicester City's Joe Mattock has been called up to England's U17s squad for a tournament next month.

Mattock has been selected by Coach John Peacock for February's Algarve Tournament which will see the U17s take on some of the best sides in Europe in Portugal.

The Tournament will the first opportunity to look at how the players have been developing over the past few months before selecting the squad that will take part in the Elite Round of qualification for the UEFA U17 European Championship in March.

In this friendly tournament England's first match will be against the hosts Portugal on Saturday 17 February. They then face France on Sunday 18 February, before meeting Germany in the final game on the following Tuesday 20 February.

England have been pitted against Serbia, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Azerbaijan in the Elite European Championship draw, with the qualification round starting on March 23 in Bosnia.

The 18-man squad:
Ben Amos - Manchester United
Moses Barnett - Arsenal
Liam Darville - Leeds United
Tom Elliott - Leeds United
Jonathan Franks - Middlesbrough
Henri Lansbury - Arsenal
Joseph Mattock - Leicester City
Victor Moses - Crystal Palace
Rhys Murphy - Arsenal
Seth Nana Ofori-Twumasi - Chelsea
Nathan Porritt - Middlesbrough
Daniel Rose - Leeds United
Tommy Smith - Ipswich Town
Jordan Spence - West Ham United
Jason Steele - Middlesbrough
Tom Taiwo - Chelsea
Daniel Welbeck - Manchester United
Michael Woods - Chelsea

Not many championship sides being represented there. Glad we are up there with the Man U and Chelsea's.

Crikey, so Arsenal do have a couple of English players after all.

What about Nana Ofori-Twumasi, though?

I don't know what it is like down your way but I have Bill Nana Ofori-Twumasi the Butcher, Fred Nana Ofori-Twumasi the Baker and Arthur Nana Ofori-Twumasi the Candlestick Maker just round the corner. ;)

Seth Nana Ofori-Twumasi currently plays for the Chelsea FC Youth Academy, featuring occasionally at Reserve level. He plays at right-back and also represents his country, England, at U-17 level. In the past, Nana has been offered contracts by top European clubs FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. Newly promoted, for 2006-07, Watford FC have also offered Nana a YTS contract, because of his age he can not be given a professional contract until he is 18. His versatility, speed and strength mean that he can adapt to many different positions on the pitch, making him a very useful and valuable player. He's been touted as a future star and has often been compared to Manchester City star Micah Richards because of his abilities.

4 out of the 9 teams represented are championship teams. That's quite a lot IMO.
