I recently had to do a computer recovery. I stupidly went on the net without cpu protections and now have shit loads of things run on it. The Modem is working all the time, meaning they must be some process working on it.

I installed AVG which found loads and dealt with it but the probelms persist. The Internet browsers are sluggish, it doesn't like opening up another program and I click and stuff doesn't load. It sometimes result in an attack on the ''shell'' or something meaning an instant closedown. I know I have cleaned it up and stopped it but I can't remember what I used.

So what do people suggest to use to clean-up the computer of spyware etc? AVG finds it but fails to deal with.

Download Spybot and/or Ad-aware.

Although having read that your system is subject to "instant closedown", you may be better advised to take your computer along to a reputable local computer shop and pay them whatever it costs for them to sort it out.

The fact that the modem is working continuously is very worrying. It might even be that your system has been hijacked and is sending out loads of email on behalf of dodgy eastern characters. Are you on dial-up? I suppose that you have checked that your modem is not connected to some 090 number that is costing you £1 a minute.

When you get things back in order, you might want to consider what kinds of sites you are connecting to and where you are downloading from.

Reformat & reinstall Windows.

There are countless sites on the internet offering advice on how to repair a PC after some kind of malware/junkware infection, there are whole industries built on it, you could spend days trawling through forums looking for that little nugget of info to help you, posting HJT logs all over the place, but when all is said & done it is a waste of time.
Once it's broken, Windows cannot be fixed, I don't care what anybody says, it's f*cked.
So just start from scratch & get on with your life, and take more care in future.

My modem is broadband luckily enough.

I know where I went wrong - I downloaded from one of these hosting websites with no internet protection. No doubt it had loads of bugs wanting to eat away. I doubt the attachment was fault but I probably picked up loads of stuff there.

I am getting a new computer - my current home one is good six years old and looks ancient. It's had to be recovered 3 times now.

Well looks like I shall put the dreaded disc in tonight - probably take a good couple of hours. I clean the car in that time.

I'd say get rid of it altogether Hazza, in fact I'd seriously give this internet thing a rest if it's casuing damage.

In fact, it might even be just Talking Balls that's causing problems. I'd stay away mate.

Best bet is to install nod32 and prevx then run them straight away it will find all the virus's and you would be good to go, if you have a boot virus it would require a fresh install. Also use ccleaner to get rid of all the random registry files.

Whatever you do don't use Norton, it will slow your pc down so much (takes up to much cpu).

Hope that helps:icon_wink

Best advice you will get Hazz!

Well everything is okay but the modem is still always lit up.

I have cleaned the computer of any bug it's picked up.

Ahh well in 8 weeks time, I will relish the time when the sledgehammer comes out.

Shouldn't the modem always be lit up anyway seeing as it is broadband?

Who is your ISP hazz??
