Three Leicester players axed from squad for crunch West Ham game over Covid breach​

Midfielder James Maddison could be facing a battle to win back his place in Gareth Southgate's England squad after the incident

Leicester axed James Maddison, Ayoze Perez and Hamza Choudhury from their top-four shootout with West Ham after the trio breached Covid regulations.

Furious Brendan Rodgers left them out of his squad after discovering they attended a party after the Premier League match against Manchester City last weekend.

It is understood the party was held by Perez, the forward, and Rodgers has taken a hardline stance by excluding them from his plans for the potentially pivotal game at West Ham.

Telegraph Sport understands the trio have not been fined as yet for breaking club rules, with Rodgers insisting that leaving them out of Sunday's crunch game was punishment enough.

Rodgers made no reference to the incident in his press conference on Friday afternoon, but will address the issue after the West Ham game.

Maddison, Perez and Choudhury will be available for next Sunday's FA Cup semi-final against Southampton at Wembley.

Brendan Rodgers is due to address the incident after the game. Maddison has only recently returned from a hip injury and this latest incident could damage his hopes of an England recall. Though he missed out on last month's World Cup qualifiers, Maddison has been watched by England manager Gareth Southgate on a number of occasions this season and this could leave him facing a battle to win back his international place.

In October 2019, Southgate warned his England players that he continually monitors their behaviour, shortly after Maddison was photographed at a poker table in a casino. On that occasion, Rodgers defended the £25 million signing and insisted his reputation as a troublemaker was undeserved.

Perez's absence comes at a time when the forward has been in arguably the best form of his Leicester career since his move from Newcastle in July 2019.

Choudhury, the midfielder, could be facing an uncertain future as a Leicester player after he was warned over his discipline by Rodgers last season. Former Leicester defender Ben Chilwell and Choudhury were both left out of the squad for the game at Burnley last January, and subsequently fined, for turning up late to a training session.

Choudhury was a loan target for Newcastle and West Brom in the January transfer window, and it is likely he will be made available this summer.

The timing of the party is absolutely piss-take astounding, a real '**** you' to club and colleagues. I wonder how many other players knew about it. I'd love to see the the club return the '**** you' and not play them for the rest of the season, move them on come summer, but you just know we won't do that with Maddison.

I really am dumb founded by the sheer stupidity of their actions. As a club, I just didn't think we had the kind of players that were that selfish. I thought we had a team spirit that would prevent such dickheadery.

I rate Perez as a player (despite his limitations) but if this party was his, and was his idea, then I wouldn't care a jot if we never saw him again.

I'd be happy to get rid. I've been one of Perez's (and Maddison's) biggest defenders on here because they are terrific players. But this, well, I'm going to find it hard to like the ****s again. I genuinely cannot fathom the sheer lack of respect they have show to their team mates, their employers and the club's fans. These self-entitled arseholes really need to get their faces in front of camera, explain themselves and apologise profusely. Not behind an agent or a newspaper, not behind a press release or their manager but in person and directly.

Yes, we should still have had enough to win that game but we were already up against it having the injuries that we have and the disappointment of Soyuncu being unavailable. With Maddison and/or Perez, we win that game. Like I said in the post match thread, I am inclined to forgive those on the pitch today, even if they were shit, because if they feel half as aggrieved as I do then I'm not suprised their heads weren't in the game fully.

Don't be silly.

For me, there is a massive question to answer from Perez. It was his party and he invited people to it. That's a level above in terms of stupidity for me. He deserves the strongest punishment but it should be a massive fine/internal suspension and nothing more. The fine should go to the NHS.

Choudhury has breached rules before. He is clearly not trusted by BR on the pitch and has demonstrated again that he cannot be trusted off it either. The sooner he's sold the better.

Maddison hasn't (to my knowledge) done anything out of order before. He will be the focus for this and will be widely criticised. It will also cost him his final opportunity of making the Euro squad which will really hurt him. That's sufficient as far as I'm concerned.
