you need to make it a transparency in something like paint.net

I have the file saved with the transparent background but whenever I convert it to an .ico file, it adds the white background.
Has anyone ever actually created an icon?

Here is the icon but notice the white background? I also have it saved as an .ico file but I cannot upload ico files here.

Can anyone convert the below to an .ico file that has no white background?

From memory theres only certain file formats that you can save as a transparency.How are you saving the image pre icon?

Unsure if thats transparency compatible or not, as Boc has suggested gif certainly is.

Gif works ok but there is still a slight white edge on my icon.

Png will work, but save it as 32bit if you can. More importantly is it that the new Blue Peter factfinders icon?
