It was yesterday down here

not when your workwear is bright yellow polo shirts and your car is broke down in B&Q car park and you are waiting for the RAC

We were discussing the other day how no one ever seems to just break down anymore. Guess it does still happen.

But I think it might be Flying Ant Day...

That exciting enough for you Lazzer?

There's a flying ant day? The ****ing things were everywhere Sunday/Monday. I couldn't go into the garden yesterday for fear of being acosted and carried away by the little winged wankers, how long can this be expected to last?

Flying ant day can be the day that they emerge and go on to live for however long.

Like christmas day, the day that the baby Jebus was born, he was knocking around for a good 30 years after that.

Quote from The Telegraph last year

People have reported seeing "swarms" of the flying insects over the weekend, coming out from under paving stones and flying into people's hair, particularly in the south of England.

However, insect experts said there is no need to panic – it is part of annual summer mating ritual for Lasius Niger, the common garden black ant.

For a few brief days towards the end of July the queen ants grow wings and ensure their male mates do likewise; then they both take to the skies to reproduce in their millions.

After mating, both the females and males lose their wings, with the queens going in search of somewhere to hibernate until they lay eggs and set up a new colony.

John Badmin, the editor of the British Entomological Society Journal, said: "You need humid, warm conditions for ant mating and it has certainly been wet in the las few weeks. But people shouldn't panic if they suddenly see hundreds of them. It is a normal part of summer."

The ants all take to the skies at the same time in order to maximise their chances of reproducing and cut down the risk of being eaten by predators, such as birds.

The most spectacular example of the insect exodus occurred in 2006, when a heat wave created a perfect summer for insects.

"Lasius Niger, the common garden black ant."

Im not having that. Thats a piss take surely.

What that doesnt say is that the males die after mating :icon_lol:

That's just not true - they tend to roll over and go to sleep, regardless of the female's satisfaction or her desire to snuggle.

Oh right cheers Matt thanks for clearing that up. I thought they being illiterate and racist at the same time. :icon_roll

Is Lasius latin for idle bastard ?
The latin name for this ant will have been around a lot longer than the racist slang term you're referring to.
