From the BBC:

Fifa ruling may hit League clubs

Andy Johnson will be unable to help Palace if he is on England duty
Clubs who are involved in this season's Football League play-offs are set to lose players involved in the World Cup finals after a new Fifa rule.
Players chosen for the finals will not be able to play in any club game after 15 May, apart from the Champions League final, which has been moved to 17 May.

It means that Andy Johnson, if chosen by England, would miss the Championship final if Crystal Palace got there.

Reading, Southampton, Port Vale and Wrexham could also be affected.

Respectively the quartet have players representing the USA, Sweden and Trinidad & Tobago.

Fifa have introduced the cut-off date so players can have sufficient rest before the finals start on 9 June.

As well as moving the Champions League final, the Uefa Cup final has also been brought forward a week to 10 May.

"We don't want burned-out players. They will be free from other engagements," said Fifa general secretary Urs Linsi.

"The 23 players on the list for each of the 32 participating nations will not be available for any other competitions after this date.

"The Champions League final is a special exception."

There have been complaints in recent major tournaments that players involved in the major European leagues had arrived in an exhausted state because of the heavy schedule of matches during the domestic season.

... and the Clubs will pay their wages. No wonder Fifa are in court at the moment. ;)

What a stupid rule! Why is it one thing for the big clubs and another for everyone else? Fifa just like the 'power' they have over millions of people.

Fifa is all about patronage. ;)

FIFA only ever cares about the competition that will generate the most revenue and the richer and bigger clubs gets to dictate a lot of FIFA's say. To me, if we get to the play-off final, it will be bigger than any final anyday, and I will be mightily p!ssed off if we lose out bcoz FIFA has bugg*red us right up the wossit.

But then again, we are not gonna get there, so i don't suppose we should get hyped up about it.

Someone worked out recently that the Championship Play-off Final is the most valuable match in world football, due to the difference between TV revenue in the Championship and Premiership.

It's fine if FIFA set a deadline, but it should apply to all clubs, not some.

FIFA own the rights towards the World Cup, UEFA deal with the Euro Champs.

The Play-Off Final is the most important club game on the planet.

Depending on who makes the playoffs, this could precipitate the inevitable legal action between club and FIFA regarding international rights, sooner rather than later - it's one thing having a compulsory release for competitive international matches, quite another to rule someone can't play for their employer during an arbitrary rest period (with one match already granted exceptional status!)

Wolves' main creative player is a regular for South Korea, isn't he?

The Football League has already denied this story and issued a statement which said that they had come to an agreement with FIFA that players would be available for the Championship play-off final on 21st May. I am not sure if the same would apply in the more unlikely event that a League One or Two player was needed to play for his club in their final the following weekend.
