I do not know where that confidence comes from. I can absolutely see him dropping Maddison for Mount.

Southgate moves slowly, it takes time for a player to get into the squad and it takes time for a squad member to get into the team. People complain about him all the time, but persaonlly I think that this is a bit of a strength. Maddison has waited to get his call up, and waited through the world cup to actually get the chance he got over the weekend. I thought he did really well so, based on his previous behaviours, I expect Southgate to stick with him now

There is a bit of a vacancy in that wide-left position, and Southgate does like versatile players. It might not be his favourite position but I do think that Maddison has got as much of a chance as anyone as playing there regularly after that showing
