I need to get hold of Excel 2013, but my need isn't such that I'm prepared to pay £60-70 for it. Does anyone know some magical place where I can get a key for considerably less?

Have you tried the free alternatives?
Actually I have not. Never even used them. I have a number of files which I've spent hours writing formulae for. Will these alternatives recognise them or will I have to rewrite them all?

The OpenOffice suite is pretty good and most of the formulae etc are the same I think.

They seem to be the same but my experience with the Prediction League tables suggest that formulae written in one did not always work in the other.

Have you considered office 365? It's free for the basics for us as a school, but not sure to the general public.

OpenOffice is no more, it hasn't had any new development for a few years now. For a free and open-source replacement for MS Office the way forward is LibreOffice.
