It seems my laptop is utterly fecked. The other day i got a virus that started making adds for spyware removers pop up ever 10 secconds, it changed my wallpaper and tried changing my home page.

I ran spybot search and destroy and it must have picked up about 20 spyware programs. I deleted everything that came up and the spyware is no longer a problem.

However, i now have a white background that i cannot change as an error message comes up when i try. the icons on the desktop are constantly highlighted, i also cannot right click on the desktop background.

Any help appreciated.

This is no particular dig at you Lako (though no help either!) but I can't understand how people still get viruses. With so many free anti-virus software packages out there and daily updates it should be nearly impossible

i have norton, avg a bloody brick wall :(

which is the best free one out there?

I, and pretty much everyone else I think, would recommend AVG free. I use Avast simply because it works on 64bit OS for free, AVG you have to pay for that :) Both are excellent and I don't know anyone who has had a problem with viruses when using them.

Lako did you have both Norton AND AVG running together?

Just norton.

does it install them automatically?

It will prompt you that an update is available when you boot up your PC, if you have an active connection.
When you confirm the prompt it will download in the background.

Back up anything on your harddrive that you want to keep & reinstall Windows.
It might seem drastic but it seriously is the quickest & most painless resolution.

Just norton.

In my experience, Norton is a complete bag of wank & without their aggressive sales tactics they would have disappeared long ago.
They consistently underperform in tests when benchmarked against all of the other security software, both free & paid for.

AVGs free version pissed all over Norton in a recent benchmark that I was reading, but it's late & I can't be arsed looking for that particular test, so ye'll just have to take my word for it.

I also have AVG, and have never had any problems since installing. Essential to keep updating though.

Set it to auto-update and then forget it. I'm sure that only does the virus updates though, I think bigger program updates have to be done manually although the notification icon does still tell you.
