Gary Speed's agent claims the current "feelgood factor" has given Bolton the edge in the battle for his signature.
The Wales midfielder's move to The Reebok Stadium from Newcastle is likely to be completed on Wednesday.
The 34-year-old agreed the terms of what is believed to be a two-year contract and underwent a medical on Tuesday.
Agent Hayden Evans revealed Speed turned down the chance to join other clubs to link up with Sam Allardyce and his squad.
Evans said: "He had a year left on his contract [at Newcastle] but there were two very big First Division clubs and three Premier League clubs who came in for him, but there is a feelgood factor about Bolton and Gary sees this as a good move for him."
I think we have missed out on Gary Speed!
