McCarthy wins senior call as Irish take on the Faroes
The 22-year-old Leicester City defender, who appeared for Ireland's under-21s on Friday, has been promoted to the full squad because of Andy O'Brien's dismissal in the 2-2 draw with Israel and the withdrawal through injury of Tottenham's Robbie Keane and Steve Finnan of Liverpool.
McCarthy has already enjoyed a taste of football with the Ireland squad. He joined them for training two weeks ago and went on as a second-half substitute during Jackie McNamara's testimonial.
McCarthy and City teammate Alan Sheehan played the full 90 minutes for Ireland's under-21s in their 2-2 draw with Israel.
Meanwhile, Irish manager Brian Kerr has insisted second place in Group Four is not an option as he still has his sights set on automatic qualification for next summer's finals.
Saturday's deflating home draw with Israel means that the fight is on for the squad to simply make the top two. But, as far as Kerr is concerned, nothing less than winning the group will do.
Scotland keeper Craig Gordon is convinced he and his teammates can get the better of Belarus tomorrow and catapult themselves back into World Cup contention.
The Scots can move ahead of their hosts by winning in the Dinamo Stadium in Minsk, a result that would put them in fourth place but just a point behind Norway and Slovenia.
The Hearts keeper said: "It will be very difficult but, if we want to get back in it, we have to win. We have a chance and if we get three points it will catapult us into contention."
Germany kicked off theirEuropean Women's title defence with a 1-0 win over Norway in Warrington last night. France secured a 3-1 win over Italy. England meet Denmark at Ewood Park tomorrow night.
