What can people tell me about his time in charge here? Record etc?

Swapped Jim Melrose for Tommy English
Kicked out Larry May for no reason whatsoever

But he did get us promoted

Was he generally accepted as being one of our better managers or not?

Jury's out, to be honest - made some truly bizarre decisions in the transfer market, but he did get us promoted

Some people will never forgive him for the Melrose deal, and I wouldn't argue with them. Prick

Well he was better than quite a few I could mention, like McLintock, Pleat, Taylor, Levein...

He did 4 seasons. 82 to 86. Some of us could not forget that his previous job had been at the other end of the M69.

Promoted in his first season. Bottom half of the 1st division in the three after that. Lost more than he won over the 4-year period.

He seemed to get the best out of the players he had but was the favourite bloke of a board that wanted to save money. Some very odd transfer dealing - was responsible for the swap deal involving Jim Melrose and Tommy ****ing E.... no, I still can't say his name!! Suffered much criticism and there was much suspicion of his motives when he failed to secure the permanent services of Gerry Daly after the player's on-loan service the previous season had arguably provided the impetus for our promotion. Also seemed to want to convert every midfielder we had into a full-back.

He's certainly no villain - I seem to remember we played some lovely stuff under his management

And we were fecked good and proper when he left

But maybe I had blue tinted specs on in those days

He didn't really leave though, did he? I mentioned earlier that he was the board's favourite, guarding them from any criticism of not putting their hands in their posckets. So much their favoutite in fact that they moved him upstairs when Bryan Hamilton was appointed to take charge of a squad that was well past its best.

Not a villain - but whether he was an angel needs a bit more considering.

i maybe wrong but wasnt he in charge when we had that dark green and yellow pinstripe 3rd away kit?? the one we never won a game in? if he was and the fact i remember him for that about sums up the impresson he made on me :icon_bigg

He was - but I think it was the second kit, not the third. Nor is it true that we never won in it - that's a myth.

The shirt wasnt in any case anything to do with Milne. It was something that the sponsors wanted and the club agreed to. In those days when the game first started to 'run away' from the smaller clubs, nothing seemed sacred when it came to getting a bit of money in.

I think it's a pity that you are willing to let a small and insignificant detail ruin your memory of the man.

its not ruining my memory of him,to be honest i remember the team at that time more than i remember him as a manager.
i just remember that kit and that it was around the time he was in charge thats all. i had one, the sponsers at the time were ind coope but they wouldnt put there logo on the kids shirt as mine was, because of it advertising alcohol, something i was most upset about!

wasnt the 2nd kit white??

Where did he sign Tommy English from ? It was a bit before my time but I'm assuming this English character was rubbish then ? And Melrose must have been good ?

thanks for all the info guys.

My first experience of a 'general manager', these days probably called director of football and I haven't changed my opinion one bit.

Watching City from afar as I was (in Anglesey, a young teenager with only match programmes and the odd teletext report to go by) he seemed to do OK, considering what the next 5-6 years brought us (and in fact around 10 of the last 20 years since he left)

Tommy English was signed from Coventry (Milne's former club) - he had earlier scored a hat trick against us. He was brought in as a swop for Jimmy Melrose.

Melrose was a relatively small Scots striker but with a bit of flair and belonged to the Jock Wallace era - like Wallace he was extremely popular.

English was hopeless and was a bad misjudgement. I think Boc has summarised how close Milne was to the Leicester board. In my opinion Milne was certainly no fool as a manager and his subsequent career abroad suggests that he knows the game and is a decent coach. However, he was never particularly liked at Leicester. I would rate him as one of our ordinary (rather than good or bad) managers - in a different class to the likes of Kelly and Levein but not a Gillies, Bloomfield or MON.

I remember Gordon Milne.

The first Leicester game I saw was when they came to play my hometown team Buckingham Town in a friendly to mark the Robins' centenary - this was during the season and they brought their first team which had just thumped Wolves 5-0 and was top of Division 2. Basically why I'm a Leicester fan.

I was a very excited 10-year old and enjoyed getting all the players' autographs - Lineker, Lynex, Gerry Daly who I thought was fantastic, and so on. Except Gordon Milne. I tried to get his autograph at half-time but he refused, saying he had to go and give the team talk. I think Leicester had scored a few by then.

I still don't know what to make of that. Ludicrous and admirable perfectionism or ridiculous bad manners towards a child?
