Fan wins with million-dollar kick

An engineer kicked a 50-yard field goal to land a bumper payout at half-time of a Canadian Football League game.
Brian Desbourg, 25, won a million Canadian dollars (£478,000) after being chosen randomly from 200,000 entries.

The promotion gave one lucky fan a chance to kick the ball through the goalposts like professional players in the North American football league.

Diesbourg nailed his last kick before 40,000 screaming fans at half-time of Toronto's 34-11 victory over Hamilton.

Kickers for the nine Canadian league clubs have succeeded in only five of 11 field goal attempts from beyond 50 yards so far this season.

Diesbourg, who had a 30-minute practice session with the kicker for the host Toronto Argonauts, missed attempts from 20, 30 and 40 yards away for lesser prizes.

He has never played Canadian football, but plays in a senior men's soccer league and can kick the ball the length of the field.

Diesbourg will receive the prize in 40 annual instalments of 25,000 Canadian dollars (£12,000).

I suggest having a draw and the lucky winner taking a penalty kick for 10K, but you have to score in the goal at the other end of the pitch.

If only to see the players play on a muddy pitch afterwards. Whatever happened to players all looking the same because there was that much mud on them. They don't know they are born today, they even change at half time. Pampered posers.

A similar competition involving a car was being planned pre-season, but all has gone quiet about it, will try & find out if it is still 'under negotiation' with the parties involved
