I am using IE7 on a talktalk broadband connection and everything was fine until just before christmas.

I received a letter from talktalk telling me they were "upgrading" my line and as a result i would suffer problems for around a week. They were also putting up the price of the broadband to cater for this "improved" service.:icon_roll

Well ever since I have had connection problems. Sometimes there is no internet there at all and at other times I can be on the internet quite happily when for no apparant reason it just kicks me off.

i have noticed that there seems to be a particular problem when i watch videos on line. It will allow me to watch a streamed video in full but then as soon as i go on to anything else there is no connection there.

I have tried contacting India (sorry talktalk) and can get very little help from them. I connect to the internet through a 3com router and have even reset this to factory settings to try to solve the problems but this doesn't seem to have changed anything!:icon_redf

If anyone can help it would be very much appreciated!

Have you been able to isolate the problem? Is it with your machine? Is it your machine's connection to the router? Is it the router? Is it your router's connection with the internet?

If it always happens when you're doing a particular thing, have you thought about whether what you are doing is causing it? For instance, are you telling IE to work offline?

Hmm pretty sure its not a computer problem. The router has a sync DSL and a data DSL light and when the problems occurs the sync DSL light remians lit solid but the data DSL light goes from being on solid to just flashing intermittently which leads me to think it is an internet connection problem.

It doesn't sound like it. What you've described is exactly what should happen.
The solid sync light means that your router has remained synchronised with the exchange. The flashing data light means that it is transferring data through the connection.

Yeh i know it should flash when in use but remain solid when im not doing anything on the internet surely? When i say it flashes intermittently I mean about every 5 seconds. This is the time when i have now connection.

It is difficult to predict, you may not be physically requesting a webpage through your browser, but there may be other background processes or applications using the connection even if you aren't looking at your PC.
My point was, it doesn't sound like a connection problem. Is there another PC you can try?

Yeh i could try hooking up the laptop to the wired connection i spose. Not gonna get a chance to do it tonight but thanks for the suggestion.

What sort of computer problem could it potentially be if it is a computer problem? My computer has been running a little slow, but AVG anti virus and spy doctor say its all clear in that respect.

Is the laptop already connecting wirelessly? Is it only when you use ethernet?

The wireless connection is not set up at the minute and hasn't been for sometime.

One thing that you could check is this. Look in the telephone sockets (NTE 5 from BT where it comes into the house at the faceplate only). Also look in all of your extension sockets. You need only Blue at pos 2 and white/blue Pos 5 on each socket. You might find that there are orange cables connected on pos 3&4 these are not required and sometimes cause interference. This may be the problem especially if TT have upgraded their ADSL as interference may be more apparent now.

Cheers Ill have a look!

And thanks Macky and Boc for your help. Got some more research to do me thinks.

But, the type of problem that could cause would result in his router losing sync, which it doesn't appear to be doing.
