I've noticed a lot of people on the forum are using Internet Explorer 6.

Can those who still use this browser please explain why they haven't upgraded to something newer?

Do people use it at work and are not able to upgrade due to IT department policies, are you using an old operating system that won't run later versions, do you not know how to upgrade, do you not consider it to be important, or something else?

IE6 has been around for 8 years now, and its non-standard behaviour means it won't work properly with a lot of sites. IE7 has been available since 2006, and IE8 is now available.
Better browsers such as Firefox have been available for a long time, and will work on systems that won't run IE7.

You think you've got problems. A 'tramway' forum to which I subscribe recently had a post listing the percentage of members using particular browsers. Last month IE (all versions) was for the first time being used by fewer than 50% of users, but the owner did wonder who it was that was still using IE4.

I may have mentioned this before, but I hate IE6 with a passion.

The trouble is, an awful lot of businesses still use Windows 2000, which means IE6 and its demonic ways will be causing problems for the foreseeable future.

I can do that...

I may have mentioned this before, but I hate IE6 with a passion.

Me too.

The reason I asked the question is to see if I can stop supporting it on some of my websites.

If people have got no choice because of work they have my sympathy, but as Firefox works with Windows 2000 their IT people should install it.
If important sites became incompatible with IE6 they'd do something about it pretty quickly.

None more important than this one. :icon_wink

The problem is two fold. One of our customers, a leading water provider ( ;) ) have 3000 systems all running IE6, all of their internal web system are built with that in mind. To upgrade would not only be a huge rollout but would also potentially involve huge internal rewrites.

Similarly another of our customers has Win2000 machines (and some Win98) but are certified Microsoft partners so have to use their browsers for political reasons.

Hate IE6 with a passion though.

Aren't there innate security risks from running that OS and that browser type? :102:

Can those who still use this browser please explain why they haven't upgraded to something newer?

Do people use it at work and are not able to upgrade due to IT department policies, are you using an old operating system that won't run later versions, do you not know how to upgrade, do you not consider it to be important, or something else?

IE6 has been around for 8 years now, and its non-standard behaviour means it won't work properly with a lot of sites. IE7 has been available since 2006, and IE8 is now available.
Better browsers such as Firefox have been available for a long time, and will work on systems that won't run IE7.

Webbo. We are still on IE6 but are moving to IE8 soon, prob August time. We didn't go to IE7 cos it's crap, but IE8 looks much more promising.

The effort to move to IE7 wasn't worth it - IE7 didn't offer much more than IE6 so what was the point? IE8 however seems to be what they intended for IE7 (but IE7 was just rushed out and had loads of bugs, etc).

It's not just a case of using IE6 one day and swapping to IE7 - dozens of separate web applications need to be tested against new versions of IE so any decision to switch to the next browser release is not to be taken lightly.

we have IE6 at work (am on it now)

i think they are waiting for the office 2007 upgrade to change it

not too fussed, although i'm pretty bored today and might look to change it
