My only thought was that he could be being lined up if Man Utd are unwilling to let Cleverly join on loan

This seems to be a widely held view; but I can't see that we have so many central midfielders. Wellens, King and Oakley (although he looks better as a right-sided midfielder; who else is a true central midfielder? Berner is really a left back, Adams is a winger and Clemence is unlikely to figure for some considerable time.
I accept that a striker with pace may be a priority, but cannot share your confidence in the midfield.
 
Perhaps it's the form of Nicky Adams which is making any further decision on loanees tougher.
 
I agree with Hazz and Alex, it would be hard on Adams to sign another midfielder. He looked very comfortable yesterday and has clearly bulked up a bit since the start of last season.

Agreed. I would be very happy to have Adams and Cleverley competing for a midfield spot along with Oakley, King, Wellens, and Ajdaravic, ignoring Wesolowski, Clemence and Verma.
